Welcome to the first part of the first chapter of The Elemental Clans. Enjoy! (Guys, this is my 100th project) (I had to split it in half because it wouldn't all fit lol) Main character: Sharktooth The sun hung high in the sky, a golden eye watching over the shimmering expanse of the ocean. On the jagged Sun Beach rocks, Sharktooth and his mate, Dolphinclaw, lay stretched out like pieces of driftwood. The stone beneath them was baked to a pleasant warmth, radiating through their fur and scales. It had been only a half-moon since Dolphinclaw’s warrior ceremony, and a full moon since Sharktooth had earned his own name. The transition from the frantic life of an apprentice to the steady duty of a warrior felt like a dream they were finally waking up to. Sharktooth sighed, a deep rumble of a purr vibrating in his chest. The only sound for a long moment was the rhythmic, hypnotic boom of the waves shattering against the shore. Dolphinclaw’s eyes were mere slits of green, clouded with contentment. "My apprenticeship felt like it would last a thousand moons," she murmured, her voice barely audible over the surf. "There were sun-highs where the salt stung my eyes and the currents felt too heavy. I didn't think I'd ever make it to the warrior’s vigil." Sharktooth leaned over, nudging her salt-crusted muzzle with his own. "You were always stronger than you knew," he replied, his gaze softening. "On the days when my own paws felt like lead, I just looked at you. Seeing your focus gave me the strength to keep paddling. You’re my heart, Dolphinclaw. Always." He gave her a quick, affectionate lick between the ears before springing to his paws with a playful chirp. "Enough serious talk," he purred, padding to the edge of the precipice where the clear turquoise water swirled into aggressive white foam. "It's a scorcher today, and my scales are already itching for the deep. I feel like I'm roasting alive up here."He looked back over his shoulder, a mischievous smirk tugging at his whiskers. “Last one to the reef is a slow-moving sea slug!” Dolphinclaw’s laugh was bright and sharp, a sound Sharktooth cherished more than the finest catch. "You're on, you mouse-brain!" They hit the water in unison—a perfect, synchronized dive that cut through the surface like silver blades. The shock of the cold was a sudden, electric jolt to the system, instantly washing away the lethargy of the sun. Beneath the surface, the world transformed. Sharktooth’s gills fluttered, drinking in the oxygenated brine, while his powerful tail fin flicked back and forth rhythmically, propelling him into the blue. He took the lead, his muscles bunching and releasing with practiced ease. Dolphinclaw was right behind him, a dark blur of determination. For a few heartbeats, the world was perfect: the sting of salt on their tongues, the dappled sunlight dancing on the sandy floor below, and the pure, raw joy of the hunt. Then, the water changed. The temperature seemed to drop, and a sudden, heavy pressure dragged at Sharktooth’s flank. He thought it was a rogue current at first, but the water didn't just pull—it pushed. A massive, silent shadow eclipsed the sunbeams above them. Shark. “Dolphinclaw!” he let out a frantic, bubbling cry. She paused, her eyes wide with a confusion that rapidly curdled into terror. The predator was a wall of gray muscle, moving with a terrifying, effortless speed that no cat could match. Its black, soulless eye locked onto Dolphinclaw.“Shark! Get to the rocks!” Sharktooth roared. Dolphinclaw scrambled, her lack of fins making every stroke a desperate, splashing struggle against the predator’s wake. The shark was closing in, its maw beginning to hinge open to reveal rows of serrated, white daggers."Sharktooth, run!" she screamed, a cloud of bubbles erupting from her mouth. But she didn't flee. Just as the beast lunged, she performed a desperate, beautiful swerve. Instead of diving for safety, she lunged toward the monster's face. Her claws unsheathed—ten tiny hooks of steel—and she raked them across the shark's sensitive, scarred nose. For one heartbeat, Sharktooth saw it: the burning fire of a true warrior, selfless and fierce. Then, the ocean exploded. A massive upheaval of water and silt erupted from the seabed. The force was so violent it sent a plume of spray high enough to drench a seagull soaring fifty feet above. Sharktooth was seized by a wall of pressure and thrown backward, spinning head-over-tail through the churning foam. What in the stars was that? he thought frantically, clenching his eyes shut as he was tossed like a pebble. (CONTINUED IN NOTES AND CREDITS)
When the water finally settled, he breached the surface, gasping and blinking salt from his eyes. His gaze darted to the shoreline. Standing on the CragClan beach was a fluffy black she-cat with an ivy vine tail. She stood silhouetted against the sun, her paws still planted firmly in the sand. She shifted the earth to save us... Sharktooth realized, his heart hammering against his ribs. She moved the very floor of the ocean to knock the shark away. The mountain cat met his eyes for a fleeting second, gave a solemn nod, and then turned, vanishing into the shadows of the crags as quickly as a ghost. “Wait!” he called out, treading water frantically. “Thank you!”But she was gone. He stared at the empty beach for a moment longer, his mind racing with the power he’d just witnessed. A ragged cough broke the silence behind him. He spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. A tree-length away, Dolphinclaw was bobbing in the water, spitting out brine and shaking her head, looking battered but very much alive. Quickly, he swam to his mate. “Are you ok?” he asked, grabbing a hold of her scruff and beginning to swim her back to the shore. “I think so,” she meowed, blinking water from her eyes. “I can swim, you know.” “This is faster,” Sharktooth replied, muffled. “Let's get back to camp.” END OF PART ONE OF CHAPTER 1
