Once settled down, Leafstar called, “Leaf-bare was harsh to us, but as New-leaf arrives, new apprentices are made.” Umberkit turned his head from Leafstar to Sandkit. Sandkit looks so confident. Umberkit’s stomach was in knots. “We have three kits that are at the age of 6 moons and are ready to become apprentices.” Leafstar started. “Cloverkit, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and be kind to your clanmates?” The end of Leafstar’s sentence emphasized that Cloverkit was mean and rude to everyone in the clan, but specifically to Umberkit. She would call him a “know-it-all” or a “try-hard” and push him around. Luckily, Sandkit was there because she had protected him from Cloverkit’s constant bullying. Cloverkit hesitated as if not being rude to Umberkit might not be worth her apprenticeship, but concluded that it was and said, “I guess.” Leafstar gave her a look, sighed, and said: “Then, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Cloverpaw.” Cloverpaw grinned and nodded. “Phoenixwing will be your mentor.” Cloverpaw’s smile wavered. Phoenixwing was known for being pretty strict despite her kittypet background. “Phoenixwing, please share your kindness and fighting abilities.” “I will do my best.” The bright orange-red she-cat said as she padded up to where Cloverpaw was and softly touched noses. Then they both backed away as Leafstar called Sandkit’s name. “Sandkit, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and listen to your mentor?” “Yes!” Sandkit’s words were filled with enthusiasm and excitement. “Then, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Sandpaw.” Sandpaw’s eyes sparkled with happiness as if she had been waiting her whole life for this. (because she had). “Sealheart will be your mentor.” At first, Sandpaw frowned but then realized that compared to Cloverpaw, she was really lucky. “Sealheart, please share your great hunting skills and your ability to focus.” “I will show her everything I know.” Sandpaw literally flipped her frown upside down and smiled as the patterned brown tom also padded towards, tapped noses, and backed up. Oh no, oh no, why did she have to leave me last!?! “Umberkit, I see myself in you, and I enjoy your work ethic to follow the rules.” Leafstar started. “I have heard that you wish to be a medicine cat. Are you sure that you wish to follow this path?” Leafstar sounded hesitant. “Yes, Leafstar, I wish to know the knowledge of the medicine cat ways.” “Then, do you promise to uphold the medicine cat code?” “I-I do.” His voice wavered. “Then, until you receive your medicine cat name, you shall be known as Umberpaw. Sparrowfall will be your mentor.” “Thank you, Leafstar,” Sparrowfall said. “Umberpaw! Sandpaw! Cloverpaw!” Sagepelt and Birchfall were smiling. “Y’all are so grown up now!” “I feel like it was just yesterday that y'all were first leaving the nursery!” Sandpaw gave them a look and they backed away. “Right, right, apprentices don’t like their parents being all sentimental.” Birchfall turned towards Sagepelt and whispered, “teenagers,”
