5: _____________ Hi, Abel, thank you so much for responding to my letter. I want, wait need to formally apologize for the things I said to you. It wasn’t fair to you and again, I'm so sorry. I didn’t ask in my last letter, but how is Carter? Evelyn has been talking about the letter he sent her non-stop. Thanks for reading, I hope to be able to talk soon. -Bailey Mae I was still confused on what Evelyn’s reasoning was for storming out like that this morning. I was sitting in my fourth period waiting for the lunch bell to ring, when my phone went off with a text from my mom. I silenced my phone until the bell rang, and I could check. As soon as the lunch bell rang, I made a beeline to the cafeteria and sat down at my normal table, waiting for my friends to get there. I pulled out my phone, and clicked on the missed call from my mom. The phone started ringing. She picked up. “Hello?” “Bailey Mae Huxley, get to the hospital now! Kiara is getting surgery for her appendix, get your sister on the way there!” “Crap.” I muttered under my breath. “Ok i’m checking out right now. Bye.” With that I hit the hang up button and finished signing the papers. I ran out struggling to get my keys into the ignition before finally turning the key, and the engine sputtering to life. I ran into the junior high, and knocked on the office glass. “Hey, I need to pick up Evelyn Huxely. We have a family emergency that is really urgent and can’t wait.” “Alright honey, let me just call down to her class.” she replies, no doubt confused. She called down and before I knew it she was walking through the door. She was chewing on her chewing necklace, so I assumed she had been very sensory overwhelmed in whatever her last class was. I figured that wasn’t gonna be fun when we got to the hospital, but I was not going to mention that. I grabbed her hand and thanked the office attendant before rushing out of the building. “Wha- where are we going Bailey?” “Mom called me, and Kiara is currently getting emergency surgery.” I said as I was practically pushing her into the car. “What?” Evelyn replied “I already told you now, please buckle up and text mom to figure out what room we are going to.” “Ok, I’ll do that.” Evelyn started opening up her phone and typing away at her keyboard. We arrived pulling into the emergency room parking lot. We practically jumped out of the car and bolted in through the doors. We got to the front desk and started to check in. I was frantically rushing everything, and was honestly confused how Evelyn wasn’t. Then again it’s Evelyn, she’d probably bottle up her feelings then write a letter about it before shoving it into that dumb shoebox she refuses to look through. “What room are you girls needing to get to?” the receptionist asked. Evelyn turned her phone towards me. “Room 507 please.” “Alright then, head up to the fifth floor and it will be a little ways down the hallway to your left.” She replied, making me relax my shoulders a bit. As we turned into the elevator, I could watch Evelyn getting more nervous every second we got closer to the 5th floor. Mom was always meaner to her. When the elevator dinged we stepped out heading out to the room. It was quiet with a lot of the doors having signs that read, “Please be quiet, I'm sleeping!” with animals and drawing and whatnot. This was the children’s surgery ward after all. As soon as we stepped in the room, Evelyn started chewing on her necklace. I wasn’t worried though, I just needed Kiara to be ok. “Took you long enough!” My mother said when we stepped inside. Even though my mom was always like this, I was surprised she wasn’t saving it for when we got home. When we were in public, she usually liked to keep up the facade that we were a perfect family of 4. There was Kiara who never got in trouble and was a perfect 5 year-old, Evelyn the “loner” 12 year old, and me Bailey Mae, the cranky 16 year old. Everyone always assumed we were the perfect image of a family, other than the fact that my dad walked out 7 years ago. We don’t talk about that much. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the nurse knocking on the door. She stepped in, clipboard in hand. “They just wrapped up the surgery, she should be here in about an hour.” she said before stepping out, shutting the door behind her. “Mom, can we please wait until we get home to do this?” I asked, preparing for the worst. “Fine, take your sister home. Don’t think it’s over though, I’m just giving you time to come up with a suitable argument.” she replied. I grabbed Evelyn’s arm and walked out.
