Developed in 1944, the XP-40Q was Curtiss-Wright's final attempt to modernize the aging P-40 design to compete with newer aircraft like the P-51 Mustang. It was the fastest of all P-40 variants, reaching a top speed of 422 mph. It featured a bubble canopy, clipped wings, and a redesigned cooling system that moved the radiators to the wing roots or a streamlined chin intake. Only three prototypes were built. Despite its speed, it did not significantly outperform existing fighters like the P-51D or P-47D, leading to the project's cancellation as the USAAF focused on newer airframes.
