--- [ what is temporal lobe epilepsy? ] temporal lobe epilepsy, often shortened and referred to as tle, is the most common form of focal epilepsy. there are two types of tle, mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and neocortical or lateral temporal lobe epilepsy. tle is a type of epilepsy in which sezuires start in the temporal lobe of the brain. --- [ how is it caused? ] there are many causes of tle such as, but not limited to - hippocampal sclerosis ( where there is scarring in the temporal lobe of the brain ) - focal cortical dysplasia ( where there is an abnormal amount of neurons inside the temporal lobe ) - brain tumors - traumatic brain injuries - infections ( such as brain abscess, meningitis, and encephalitis ) - and genetic variants. tle is not known to be genetically inherited, instead being caused by physical trauma to the brain and the temporal lobe. --- [ how does it affect people? ] many people with temporal lobe epilepsy struggle with memory imparements, finding it hard to create new memories and recall information from the past. tle often causes partial sezuires which usually start with the individual feeling an odd sense of déjà vu. they also may feel a sense of fear, anxiety, or dread in the beginnings of these sezuires. some patients have even described feeling like their stomach feels as if they're on a rollar coaster. in the beginning stages of sezuires caused by tle, indivuduals may feel sensory changes, such as a strong smells. during sezuires, individuals with tle often enter a daze-like state and engage in behaviours such as fidgeting with objects/their body and smacking their lips. once a sezuire is over, they often feel confused, experience extreme fatigue, and may even suffer from temporary speech issues. though tle is not usually deadly, it can have some setbacks for the futures of individuals without proper care. some may experience trouble sleeping and memory loss. --- [ how will it affect merakikit? ] temporal lobe epilepsy won't affect merakikit in the beginning stages of her life as tle usually doesn't begin to develope/appear until an individual is around ten years old. she'll be a normal cat up until around mid-apprenticeship. this is when she'll begin to have mild sezuires. often times, merakikit will try to get away from others while she's having these, thinking that by having them, it makes her seem weak. over time though, she'll begin to be open about her condition and confide in her loved ones. during warriorhood, merakikit will begin to experience slight memory loss and become frustrated with herself for not being able to recall things as good as she used to be. as she gets older, her sezuires will gradually become more serious and her sleep will become more disturbed. this will lead her to having to visit the medic den often to get poppy seeds and other herbs to help with her sleep. --- [ how will merakikit cope with it? ] merakikit will cope with having temporal lobe epilepsy by confiding in her close friends and family about her concerns, visiting the medicine den often, and doing memory games. she'll also want to have a cat by her most of the time in case of an unexpected sezuire.
