This is a simple, inaccurate animation about how plutonium is created, and how the fission process works. Plutonium breeding is creating plutonium from uranium. Fission is how nukes and nuclear power plants work. Plutonium Breeding: 1. Blast a neutron into U-235 (enriched uranium) 2. The U-235 is unstable and splits into multiple neutrons. 3. The neutrons hit U-238 (not enriched), making U-239. 4. The U-239 goes through beta decay, creating NP-239 5. The NP-239 goes through beta decay, creating PU-239 (plutonium). Nuclear Fission: 1. You scatter enriched uranium or plutonium. 2. You blast a neutron at one of the atoms. 3. They split, releasing energy and more neutrons. 4. These neutrons hit more atoms, releasing more energy and neutrons, causing a chain reaction. Notes This is inaccurate for a number of reasons. It doesn't use math to calculate mass and velocity. Electrons don't just disappear, it takes longer than the universe has been around. A free neutrons take at least 900 seconds to decay. Also, during the breeding, if the neutrons hit the U-235, it should split into more atoms, not disappear. One thing to remember is that at this scale, there would only be one atom every million of screens. All code and art was made by me.
