But if that was true, then why weren’t they more confused than me, someone who chose to come here? “What was your first thought when you woke up this morning to see all of your family, something that never happens?” “Relief.” “Not confusion? You literally wake up and see things that are not meant to be there, and you don’t even question it?” Sei looked at the ground, then studied their hands, finally lifting their gaze to meet mine. Something was wrong.
Chapter 五 “Sei!” I shouted, running towards them, hugging them from behind. I felt an indescribable feeling of relief and joy upon finding them. “Uh, hey,” they mumbled, not bothering to look up from their book. Their expression showed no guilt, as if they hadn’t ditched me this morning and had been nowhere to be found the whole day. I mean, Sei had always acted nonchalant like this, but this seemed intentional. “Where were you this morning?” I asked. “What do you mean?” “I mean, when I went to your house, where were you?” “Oh, so you noticed.” “Of course I noticed! Where have you been all day?” I paused, remembering we weren’t even in the school right now, instead in some weird version that could definitely not be just a closet. “And why are you here? Where even are we?” I continued asking them. “Oh, Yuki, always so many questions…” “So? Are you gonna answer me?” “I dunno. I woke up, went to school, and here we are. Wow, so interesting,” they said sarcastically, pretending to be bored. Sei was always like this, making sarcastic remarks and acting so relaxed in a way I never could. This was one of the things I both admired and found difficult about them at the same time. “Come on, be serious. You and I both know this is not normal. I can see it in your eyes.” “What's not normal?” Sei replied, looking visibly nervous and stunned. That was not normal for them in the slightest. They always looked so sure of themself. But as always, it didn’t take long for them to snap out of it. “We are eating lunch at school on a Tuesday. Seems pretty normal to me.” “Sei, I think you definitely know where we are right now. How did you get here?” “Well, that’s a loaded question.” Their eyes darted away from me and to the ground. “Besides, how did you even get here?” “Closet door.” “. . .” They side-eyed me, awaiting context that was never going to come. If they wouldn’t tell me, I didn’t have to either. Two can play at this game. “What? If you’re not going to tell me anything, why should I tell you?” I sat down at the table next to them, looking sincerely at them, wanting answers. “Look around you,” Sei said, breaking the silence, managing to get their thoughts back together and speak with the confidence the Sei I know has. “What?” “Look around you. What do you notice? The tree I used to sit under last year, when I was upset about everything—the same one you always knew where to find me. Where is it?” they asked, already knowing the answer. I looked around for it, where it would usually be, to our left. But it wasn’t there. “They chopped it down?” I asked. “You’re missing the point. Let’s try this again. The bike rack is right over there, right?” They pointed towards the school's entrance. “Yeah.” “Do you see my bike?” “You don’t have a bike.” “Just look.” I squinted, eventually seeing a purple bike that looked quite similar to the one they had sold last year, the very reason they always had to ride with me in the morning. “What is that doing here?” “Oh, Yuki, haven’t you understood yet? This place is different. Much different. And at the same time, much better. A blessing even. And guess what? When I woke up this morning, guess who was downstairs? My mom. And when I walked downstairs, my dad was still home, not at his day job. My brother had his lunch made for him, not making it himself at his young age. And everything was just normal.” They sighed happily, like this was a huge relief. I looked at them, trying to read their expression. This all seemed made up, but they were clearly being genuine. I blankly stared at them for a minute, trying to comprehend what they had just explained to me. “But…that’s not possible, Sei.” “But it is,” they replied, grinning. “Make this make sense. You know I’m not good at filling in gaps on my own.” “Fine. If you really need me to spell it out for you. This is where we usually are,” they point to the corner of the book they were reading, “and this is where we are right now.” They dragged their finger across the book, so that it was now resting at the opposite corner, “And there’s a line between the two. Usually, you can’t cross this line, but both of us somehow found a way to do so. When someone crosses this line into a separate place, usually not the same every time, and interchanges, they are presented with a different world, and can choose whether they want to stay here or not. If this isn’t decided quickly, they can get trapped here. They are removed from their original timeline as well, helping them seamlessly transition into their new reality.” “How does this happen? And how would you even know? I didn’t even choose to come here; I just saw an unusual door and went to check it out. Besides, you couldn’t have come here the same way.” (see above)
