⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀˚₊ Drop Dead Song Analysis ₊˚ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ━◦○◦━◦○◦━ - - - ╰┈➤ About <3 ´ˎ˗ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳ Thought I might try something different and share some thoughts on Olivia Rodrigo's new song, Drop Dead! This isn't a fully in depth analysis but some things I thought were interesting to note <3 ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ꔫ ❝ I know that the bar closes at 11, but I hope you never finish that [drink] ❞ (verse 1) ✎ This is such a cute way of expressing you want to spend more time with someone! This is something she does really well throughout the song, finding really creative ways to express being in love. Another example of this is when she calls him heavenly by bringing up song lyrics: ⠀⠀⠀⠀☎ ❝ You know all the words to Just Like Heaven, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and I know why he wrote them now that you're ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀standin' right here ❞ ꔫ ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ꔫ ❝ And I feel like... let's go out ❞ (Verse 2) ✎ This spoken section reminds me a lot of the Hot To Go bridge, especially in theme and lyrics, but because of the rhythm! However, it's more soft spoken like Olivia did in Obsessed from the GUTS deluxe version. I find it super interesting how she broke the stereotypical pop song formula having her second verse be so different from the first one, I think it helped differentiate the song more! ꔫ ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ꔫ ❝ One night I was bored... ❞ (chorus) ✎ The chorus is very rhythmically simple for the most part, since the song is in 4/4 and she's often singing quarter notes and occasionally eighth notes. However, I love the style and intricate melody of the whole chorus and think it really works well! I think the rhyming of the chorus is really good and I love the comparison to an angel of Versailles. ꔫ ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ꔫ ❝ Pisces and a gemini... ❞ (bridge) ✎ The repetitive bridge style works because of the harmony layering, like in can't catch me now and lots of other songs, I like how she applied it to her more rock style here! (Speaking of harmony, it's popular to add an extra top harmony almost descant in the last chorus, which she did in this song, and it sounds sooo good!) The diction in the lyrics here also helps it pop a lot and sound nice. I also love that there's a short instrumental interlude with a guitar lick/riff, that's something I don't think I've heard in a while for some reason, but it was a nice change for a moment that also stood out. ꔫ ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ꔫ ❝ Overall + MV ❞ ✎ The song and video is so 2000s coded and I love it. It's def a fresh vibe from her while still incorporating elements of her successful music from before. She was able to really well combine the new "in love" era with the more angsty rock style from guts! One small criticism is I wish there were clearer vocals, I get that it was for the style, but imo it could've pulled out a clearer melody line and vocals in general to help you catch all of the words against the instrumental and layered vocals. The MV itself is also super cute, and I love that it's in Versailles itself! Super fitting with the song lyrics. ꔫ ꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀꕀ ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳ That's it! What do you think of her new song?
