❊My Research For Myopia❊ ❊Table Of Contents❊ - Intro/Table of Contents {You are here!} - What Is Myopia? - What Are The Symptoms? - How Will This Affect My Pup? - Credits ❊What It It❊ Myopia is an eye condition where objects close to a person may appear in focus, but objects that are far away will appear fuzzy and unfocused. It is quite common compared to some other conditions, and will typically be identified young. Typically, it will get worse as the person ages, but it will usually stop worsening at a certain age, which varies from person to person. It can be inherited as most people who have myopia have at least one biological parent who has it too, but it is not guaranteed. It is also possible to develop myopia through one's lifestyle, but it it less likely for most people. ❊What Are Its Symptoms❊ I do have nearsightedness myself, so I will list some of the symptoms I typically get along with others that appear later on in life Some things that happen to me are: - Close objects appear clear while objects from far away appear very blurry and fuzzy. When I'm not wearing my glasses, everything from more than a foot away will appear slightly blurry while objects from more than around 5 feet are very blurry. I literally cannot read the words I'm typing on my screen without my glasses right now if I don't squint. - Headaches. I get these a /lot/, I had a problem with migraines when I was younger as well. I usually get these if I do something (such as reading in the dark/without my glasses) that strains my eyes for too long. Sometimes the headaches go away after a few hours, but other times they can get so bad that only going to sleep will stop them. - Squinting very often, I find that I tend to do this on a daily basis, especially if I'm trying to read something that's a little farther than I usually can read, despite having eyewear. Most of the time I don't even realize I'm doing it until I relax my eyes instinctively Some things that may occur due to myopia later in life: - Cataracts, which are cloudy areas in a person's eye that affect their ability to see clearly, no matter the closeness of the object - Glaucoma, which is an eye condition that can lead to partial or even full blindness in one eye Optic neuropathy, which is another eye condition that can lead to vision loss, but can also affect the colors viewed with that eye ❊How Will It Affect The Pup❊ Myopia will affect Eagle throughout his entire life and day-to-day activities. From a young age, he'll notice that some objects from far away tend to be more fuzzy, making it harder to identify other wolves and places from afar. As a pup he won't be too worried about it as his daily activities don't include major eye strains. By the time he becomes old enough to hunt and leave camp, he'll begin to realize that his vision is different from others, and his vision will only get worse as time progresses. He'll have the most difficulty hunting, because being unable to identify prey from afar is a severe disadvantage. He'll rely more on scent and sounds to hunt, but on windy days he will most likely avoid hunting altogether because it'll be too hard for him. Another thing that will be affected by his myopia will be his fighting skills. If he were to ever participate in a battle, he'll often avoid attack!ng first in fear that he'll accidentally att one of his packmates. Because of this, he will pay special attention to his packmates' pelts and small habits to be able to identify them in the midst of the chaos Along with all of this, there will be some days that Eagle will get headaches from straining his eye too much. On days like those, he'll most likely be resting in his nest or wandering around camp, feeling too crummy to do anything else. He'll try to drink more water when the headaches come, but that won't help most of the time as they weren't caused by dehydration. If Eagle ever has a litter of pups, there will be a high chance that they will inherit this condition. I would research the chances of children inheriting myopia from their parents and then spin a wheel to determine if his pups will get it too. ❊Credits❊ https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/8579-myopia-nearsightedness https://vethelpdirect.com/vetblog/2024/05/03/is-it-possible-for-dogs-to-be-short-sighted/
