I would like to preface this by saying that my interpretation of WL and your interpretation of WL don’t have to agree with each other for it to be valid. I really like when people have their own opinions and thoughts about media, so I try my best not to say a lot about or be overhanded with my opinions on WL (except that tmbl post I made about Doge I was really passionate about that idk why), especially because as the artist ik that people will probably take my interpretation of WL very seriously. I will also say that WL being as good as it was was thanks to the strength of individual character identities and not at all to any cohesive message I was trying to tell because I did not even know how I was going to end WL until I was over halfway through. All this to say, your guess is just as good as mine. I just feel very passionately about this particular facet of WL and would feel a bit remiss not passing on the lessons I learned to you. I think WL has a really strong central conversation about what you’d be willing to do to protect others and if the things you are willing to do are really good in the end. This is the strongest interpretation of the events of WL that I’ve been able to come up (which doesn’t ruin the ending THANK. GOD.) So what does this have to do with Wisestar you may be asking? I’m going to hope that my writing was good enough to convey to you all that Wisestar only did everything he did for his own gain, with no thought about others well being. Every other character is striving and struggling to be a good person, and genuinely cares for the others around them. This makes him the one and only outlier in WL’s cast, in regards to motivations (except maybe Lilac??? Ig idk I’d have to actually reread his chapters because his arc has some layers but that’s unrelated.) I think his character could’ve made a great argument about whether or not it is worth it to be kind. I think this is kind of present in the climax of the story but not used to its fullest potential. I think if I knew more about writing I would’ve recognized the potential this had and utilized it more. I especially would have appreciated it because it would’ve made earlier endings where there is a far more direct final conflict between Wise and Sunny work a lot better and I wouldn’t have had to rework the endings so many times. But then WL might be a a pretty different story. So as things are I don’t really mind that Dogestar was actually (meant to be) the focal antagonist. That also allows me to get away with putting Wisestar in the background. I have problems with that too but that’s a conversation for another day. The issue I really want to tackle is that Wisestar’s in this weird shrödingers cat situation where he kind of is the main antagonist but he is also kind of a plot device and he doesn’t really claim to either and he’s kind of just this edgy one note character in an otherwise pretty strongly written story. I WILL SAY. I will say. I think Doge should’ve been the one to kill him. It would’ve been good. I think the final showdown should’ve been him and her it would’ve fixed the shrödingers cat thing by placing her above him because she’d have defeated him BUT THEN HIS THEMATIC RELEVANCE WOULD STILL HAVE TO BE DEALT WITH DAMN. This is what happens when you write a character with no purpose. But yeah um… he’s kind of just corny and edgy… This isn’t necessarily a bad things like if the character is corny and edgy to serve a purpose (or their writing just comes across that way but is still strong) that’s fine. If I didn’t like corny and edgy I wouldn’t be a kingdom hearts fan. But also. I feel like it’s kind of an excuse for his character writing. I did have a clear enough idea of who he was and why he acted the way he did (after a certain point of writing the story) but I believe I mistook making him edgy as intentional writing. So what happened was that his motivation and identity never came across clearly whenever I wasn’t flat out spelling it to the audience. And so his character is much flatter than what I wanted him to be, and a weak link in my story. Uh but yeah I’d love to hear if any of this conversation helped you, or if you disagree (or also if want to correct me if im wrong about something I do not remember everything about this series correctly) until next time! The music is everything reminds me of her by Elliot smith because that song is pretty cool
