Chapter 2: Ike’s hands tremble on Gwen’s, “I-I,” he studders, “I don’t think this is a good idea… To stay in this house, I mean.” He looks around, “With the robot in there and all… That kid might be dead too; do we really want to risk our lives?” Gwen shakes her head, “I guess you’re right.” Ike hoists himself up, pulling Gwen up with him. His fingers wrap around hers as he pulls them both onto the porch. Gwen plops down next to him, and an awkward silence stretches between them. Ike clears his throat as cars approach, “Looks like backup has arrived.” He mutters as he sees Ash climbing out of the driver’s seat. Ash is a tall, pale guy with black silky hair. He always wears it back in a ponytail, bangs in his face. He also wears a stupid, at least Ike thinks it’s stupid, smirk anytime he sees Gwen. Ash makes his way to the porch Ike and Gwen sit. “Hey, slackers!” Ash says, nudging Gwen’s knee with his, “Fear not, your backup has arrived!” he holds out a hand in front of Gwen, she takes it, Ash pulls her up. Ike glares at Ash, “Common, Ike, we haven’t got all day. Show us where the robot and kid are.” Ash is always bossy with everyone but Gwen. Ike rolls his eyes and stands slowly, leading everyone to the pile of broken wood and rocks. “Kid’s in there, huh?” Ash says, shining his flashlight on it. He squats down, observing the pile carefully. He hears a rustle, and he jerks back. The other soldiers point their guns at the pile, but Ash signals them not to. They lower their weapons. Ash dusts the bits of gravel and dust off his pants. He gives Ike a sharp look, “I see no robot, Ike. Show it to me.” Ike knows this move, Ash can see the robot, clear as day, but he wants to risk Ike.
