Welcome to my first weekly album review! Starting off with my favourite album made sense. Hope you enjoy my nerdy waffle (blame Anthony Fantano) ———— TWICE REMOVED The opening track of this album is titled ‘Twice removed’. When I first listened to Revengeseekerz, I was not super impressed, mainly because of tracks like this. I initially dismissed it as overproduced, over-bass-y, auto-tuned rage-rap. I was very wrong. This track has grown on me a lot, though is one of my least favourites on the album. The production is still very detailed and dramatic, and it makes sense as the opening track. The chorus. ‘(Bad word) was 03, 03, (bad word) I’m Avril Lavigne’ feels so awesome, and gets me every time. Psychoboost feat danny brown This was one of the tracks that immediately impressed me. The build up at the start, with the gradually building synths and percussion, then Jane’s vocal chops, followed by Danny’s rapping hits SO hard. It sounds so aggressive and energetic, and the EDM influences hit so hard on this track. Absolutely one of my tracks on all time, and my second favourite on this album. Star people This is an underrated song. It flows so seamlessly off of the abrupt ending of Psychoboost, with the dramatic, bassy first half followed by the slower, guitar-y second half. It sounds really cool, and the change in pace between the first and second half offer some needed breathing room between Psychoboost and experimental skin. Experimental Skin I love this track too. This is either my third or fourth favourite track on the album, with probably my favourite bass drop. ‘I wanna sin, blow the city up’ really encapsulates the feeling of this song. The guitars, synths and bass throughout sound so cool, ending in the climax on the drop. Awesome stuff. angels in camo Angles in camo is not my favourite, or least favourite. I really like the opening. DEAR GOD PLACE A CURSE ON THOSE WHO WRONGED ME,,, angels in camo……. Yeah. It’s awesome. Buuuut the song doesn’t really go anywhere. Don’t get me wrong it isn’t bad, I actually really love it, I just don’t have much to say about it. Dreamflasher This is overrated, I think. I do really love it and think it’s one of the highlights, however I think it is slightly too popular. The pummelling bass is really cool throughout the track, and the line ‘lots of people scream my f name’ is pretty cool too. I really enjoy this one, but there are better, especially what comes after… TURN UP OR DIE There’s a reason Jane named their tour after this single. It’s absolutely awesome. It drops you in immediately with the aggressive bass and synths, vibrating your whole body. Then, it calms down slightly, letting Jane’s vocals shine, which are really awesome on this track. ‘Hold your breath you’ve been through this a thousand times’ is a very fitting line, as the song sounds very stressful and claustrophobic, yet still awesome, gradually building until the second best drop on the album, then slowly ending, again revealing Jane’s vocals at the end of the track. Dancing with your eyes closed This is the best song on the album. Initially, I wasn’t too impressed with dwyeoc, but it grows on me with every listen. The different layers and textures throughout the song, building, disappearing, hi-hats, bass, synths are all so intricately produced and are so catchy and energetic. The gradual introduction of each element is so cool, and Jane’s vocals on this track are so amazing too. The music video is amazing as well, wish I was there lol. Fadeoutz I consider this to be the first of 2 interludes, even though it really isn’t. It fades so beautifully out of the chaos of dwyeoc (hence the name fadeoutz ig), providing a great place for professional vengeance to start from. It is a slower, less aggressive track, that I feel probably only works in the context of the album, though, it’s great, so probably sounds good on its own too. Professional Vengeance This is probably the most pop-y song on the album, implementing Jane’s hyperpop origins into the song. It’s a real banger, one of the highlights on the album for sure, though, I don’t have much else to say about it. The frailty motif playing when Jane screams ‘IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT’ is pretty cool too, calling back to the success of their first album, frailty, as opposed to the mixed reception to Census Designated (album 2). Dark night castle This is the second of the interludes I was speaking about earlier. This track isn’t my favourite, though the haunting piano riffs are a pretty nice touch. It’s also a slower track, but has a more scary atmosphere than fadeoutz, which has more of an upbeat tone. JR JR JR This song reminds me a lot of the opening track. TWICE REMOVED, and works well as a closing track. The ‘Jesus in the moshpit’ line is pretty cool, the lyrics on this track generally being a standout to me. The production is also solid on this song, the JR JR JR text-to-speech sample being pretty cool, reminding me of
[CONTINUED] their remix of Frost Children’s ‘Shake It Like A’. It gradually fades, ending the album on a dramatic note and making the project feel complete. Great closer. Hopefully I managed to convince some of you to listen to this album, and to understand the complexities of music production and that autotune or bass doesn’t always mean bad. Whenever approaching a new piece of media, consume it with an open mind. For me, this album is a 10/10. (My opinion btw, please tell me yours in the comments,!!) ———— Thanks for reading my enthusiastic, yet probably boring yap. Next week, I will probably review another Jane album (or Jane adjacent), Danny Brown’s Atrocity Exhibition or Death Grips’s The Money Store (maybe exmilitary if I’m feeling like it). Anyways. That’s all. Thanks,! (Please tell me if I made any typos or spelling/grammatical errors PLEASE)
