Chapter 4 The rest of the day was a blur. I walked from class to class feeling sad and hollow without my best friends there to make me laugh. I received a couple more smiles and glances that breezed by me like they weren’t even there. At lunch, I caught a glimpse of Casey and Delilah and I waved but they were too busy with their new group of friends to notice me. I sat down at a random seat with my lunch tray and put my head on the table, defeated from the long dreary day. “You’re in my spot.” I heard a voice say beside me. My head snapped up and I was shocked to see that Carlos was standing next to me with his tray. I was even more surprised that he had actually talked! I had never heard Carlos' voice before and all I could think to do was mumble “Sorry, I'll move.” and stand up to sit somewhere else. As soon as I stood up Carlos sat down across from me and said, “it’s okay, I was just surprised, nobody ever sits here.” I just nodded and sat back down, expecting the most awkward lunch period I would ever have. The next thing I knew, brian and his 2 friends, Kevin and Leo were standing at the end of the table and glaring at Carlos. “Nobody sits here because of you.” brian turned towards me and said, “you really wanna sit with this dork? Why don’t you sit with someone worth your time.” he smiled at me, this crooked smile that made all the popular girls go crazy. How could they be so stupid? Brian was the worst! He was a rude, overambitious, self absorbed jerk who didn’t care about anything that didn’t have to do with him. I turned to look at him and said, “I'm sorry, I would but I just saw something that made me lose my appetite.” He looked around and said, “what is it?” I smirked and said, “your face.” He turned bright red and walked away, Kevin and Leo trailing behind him like loyal dogs. I felt a little better after that, I smiled as I ate my lunch and just for a moment, I think Carlos did too.
