There was shouting, screaming, cursing, threats. Before that, my mom had always been kind, loving, smart, and she had cared about her family more than anything else in the world. Until that day, 8 years ago. That fight. That was the day everything ended. I’m fifteen years old now, I’m in high school and have three friends. And I live as an average teenager, living a normal life in a normal town with normal friends. Or that’s what everyone thinks. Even my parents- well, my dad thinks my life is normal. But he’d be wrong. I go out to the forest behind my school every evening, right to the small, clear stream running through the center of the woods. That’s when I feel best, that’s when I feel right. That’s when I feel at home. I hear a voice behind me, “Lilliana, did you hear me?” It’s my math teacher, Ms. Fletcher. I turn around in my seat and meet her big brown eyes, “No, I didn’t.” I say, my voice is harsher than I’d hoped it would be, “Sorry, Ms. Fletcher.” I add quickly, hoping it will make up for my harsh tone. She smiles warmly at me, her dimples a comforting sight, “It’s alright, Lilli. Just pay attention next time.” She walks back to her desk just before the bell rings. She sighs, smiling as her gaze sweeps across the classroom. After school lets out - finally - I slip away from the crowd around me and take off towards the forest.
