I walk along the small, hard to see path that is oh so familiar, looking around at the trees and foliage around me. The golden sunlight shines through the trees, shadows dance along the path. Then the large, flower-filled clearing comes into view, and I see a deer drinking from the small, clear stream running through the center. He hears my footsteps and looks at me. I look at his beautiful antlers. His beautiful, pitch-black antlers. Black antlers, blood-red eyes, and dark red fur. He’s stunning. I creep forward, trying my best not to scare the deer. Despite my best efforts, he runs away through the forest and disappears into the evening light. I finally look towards the little stream; it seems slightly darker than usual, but somehow still clear. Deeper. That’s when I realize… It’s red. Dark red. It looks like blood. I drop to my knees and run a hand through the stream. It feels like normal water but doesn’t look like normal water. I pull my hand out, and see that it’s now stained with red. I let out a heavy sigh; I’ll just tell my dad that I got ink on my hands at school or something. *** When I get home, I immediately start walking towards my room, hoping my dad won’t try to talk to me about why I’m home so late. It doesn't work. “Lilliana, where’ve you been?” My dad asks from behind me. I spin around to face him, “I was hanging out with my friends after school.” I say, trying to sound convincing. He narrows his eyes, and I think he knows. But then he says, “Alright. Just don’t be out so late next time.” He walks away, and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. I quickly walk upstairs to my room and close the door behind me. It’s 9:00 pm, I’m normally awake until 10:30 pm or so, but I get into bed anyways, finally going to sleep
