Hey Evelyn, I didn’t really expect you to write back to be honest. I’m super glad you did though. To answer your question, I’m really into Nirvana right now. They're just super teenage-y. You know? I know we technically aren’t teens yet, but your birthday is coming up in like a week and a half. Are you doing anything this year, or is your mom being.. your mom? -Carter I had just sent the letter when Abel pulled up yelling at me to get in the car or we’d be late. I jumped in throwing my bag in the back before Abel spoke up. “So, Carter, how was school today?” he asked, looking grim. He was definitely hiding something. “Good.” I replied. “Are you ok?” I asked. I had already assumed what he was about to say but it still was unexpected. All of a sudden he started talking really, really fast. “Bailey sent a letter back, and I don’t know what to do because I still like her, but I’m also still mad at her for saying those things, but I also don’t think she ever liked me, and I’m just so confused and have no clue what to do.” He said, now out of breath. “First of all calm down, Second of all, Evelyn answered me and you just have to be chill about answering her.” I said, amused because I was the one giving advice for once. I knew he was probably overthinking this a lot. I knew he liked her. Although, when I told him to chill out he seemed to calm down. We arrived at the soccer field, and I said bye before grabbing my bag out of the trunk and running out to the field to meet my teammates there. I set my bag on the bench and tied on my cleats. When I started towards the field Jason tapped me on the shoulder. “Hey, man, you need something?” I asked. “Nah, just letting you know that we gotta cancel plans at my place this weekend. My parents have to go to a work party. Sorry, maybe next weekend.” “Oh, ok it’s totally fine no worries.” I said. We ran out to the field together. When we got there Coach Mcarthy immediately started yelling at us to run our drills. We got in groups of three and started running down the field while passing the ball. Two hours later he blew the whistle, signling the end of practice. I ran to the bench to grab my stuff and I ran out. Abel pulled around to pick me up. He told me that he sent a letter. I asked if he expected one back. He told me he hoped he got one, but it would be fine if he didn’t. With that we drove home. When we arrived I headed up to my room and threw off my cleats. I jumped onto my bed and opened my laptop. I had some homework I had to get done. I opened up my math assignment and got to work. By the time I finished it was almost 11:00pm. knew Abel was most likely asleep by now. I walked into my closet and pulled out a pajama shirt and some shorts. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower, before setting my clothes on the counter. When I exited the shower, I checked my phone for the time. It was 11:16pm. I got dressed, brushed my teeth, turned on my TV, and walked out. I headed downstairs to grab a snack and heard Abel in our dad’s office. I heard him open what sounded like a cabinet. That didn’t make sense. The only cabinet in his office is the… “Abel?” I walked in to see him unlocking the liquor cabinet and taking a bottle of whiskey. “What are you doing?” I asked, confused on what led him to do this. “I’m just trying a little sip, nothing much.” He replied. “My friend told me how good it tasted.”
