The Rubakov-Callan Reactor (named after the Rubakov-Callan effect) is a unique reactor design using magnetic monopoles and magnetic confinment to produce energy. At its simplest form it is essentially a single monopole contained by magnets. For example: a south charge monopole is put into the reactor and electiricty is used to reverse the magnetic containment to northern charges and vice versa, then a steady stream of protons are launched into the reactor. Another thing? The monopole is not consumed during the reaction! Preferably this will cause proton decay! However we got problems, for one thing we don't actually if monopoles exist (but seeing as people in this RP used interdimensional FTL I'm gonna assume string theory is a fact), another problem is that monopoles are likely rare. Actually scratch that impossibly rare Voidia actually getting their hands on a monopole would probably go on the inter-galactic news, to keep a monopole stationary, you would need a magnetic field that perfectly opposes its own at every point. This is extremely unstable, to launch a steady protons you need an accelerator. Oh no! Radiation and heat, another issue is that if containment fails the now: impossibly rare monopole reactor has become a useless particle accelerator and the ship now has a tiny boring hole in it. The main issues are of course: the radiation, heat, and the magnets. To solve this? Voidian engineers proposed a unique fix: Instead of a rigid magnetic cage, Voidia uses Dynamic Stabilization. This relies on rapidly oscillating magnetic fields! We then guide it into a Lissajous pattern (a complex, weaving loop). Because the monopole is always moving, it doesn't have time to settle and melt through one specific spot on the hull. The heat and radiation are spread across the entire interior surface of the reactor rather than being a single, hull-piercing beam. Not only that but instead of a single stream of protons, the reactor is flooded with a low-density plasma. As the monopole zips through this plasma "cloud," it naturally passes within the critical distance needed for the Rubakov-Callan effect to trigger proton decay. The monopole essentially acts like a combustion spark flying through a gas tank. The energy is then stored in powerful supercapacitors to store the energy for general use. Problem now? GETTING THE MONOPOLES! Let’s assume monopoles were made during the early EARLY universe thus monopoles will be at the EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE To solve this I propose this: galaxies have areas with high amount of monopoles as some monopoles could have helped create galaxies these rich in monopole galaxies essentially become the middle east’s of the RP which is not only cool but can help with lore development and story making! Not only that but as the galaxies reserves of monopoles eventually runs out this will cause people to expand to other galaxies and give people a justification for expansion that isn’t just “ungah bungah me want planets.” Plus: justification for big fleets found!!11!! Plus resources crisis would be cool! Not only that but we might end up having NPNs (non-playable nations) that act sort of like the locals that can help make expansion more interactive and interesting! Oh wait! We end up with a Middle East and Africa situation (someone is gonna make the Belgian Congo bro I swear) Now because treating the natives as pure cannon fodder would be boring: Those natives likely have monopole technology so actually conquering them would be FAR MORE DIFFICULT than normal So I get my cool proton decay reactor while also technically in general helping the RP! BUT WAIT: how much energy would a Rubakov-Callan Reactor make? If a proton decays completely, you’re converting almost all of its rest mass into energetic particles. Using Einstein (E=mc^2) for a proton it has a mass of 1.67*10^-27! Each proton thus gives roughly: 1.5*10^-10 joules . This is tiny, but here's the catch: matter contains an INSANE number of protons. If this monopole reactor catalyzes decay efficiently, then: 1 kg matter is roughly 9*10^16 joules. Yeah. Busted. NOW REALISTICALLY because even with Voidias reputation of being psychopaths we only convert 1 milligram/second that gives: 9*10^10 J/s or for people who aren't psychos: 90 gigawatts. That's with a SINGLE MILLIGRAM per second, this is roughly dozens of modern nuclear plants worth of power. Thus REALISTICALLY the reactor cannot be pushed to its full theoretical capacity. As that would cook the ship inside out. NOTE/OOC: Voidia does not have a monopole reactor yet to test this. Even though I'm technically a mod I will wait for the approval of other mods because this is an unhinged concept (though I have given good reasons to allow monopoles that aren't just: haha me want cool reactor). Its also good to note that Voidia (or really just anyone in general) cannot synthesize monopoles. This keeps monopoles as a rare resource. +
BUT WAIT? Why can't we synthesize monopoles? Well that would require to essentially recreate the big bang (if I'm correct,) this would likely require a particle accelerator literal light years in radius which pretty much nobody in the CBMV, PU, etc has the logistics or economics for. As for PU, I think it would be mostly realistic after GW2 or during it I will still however be waiting for approval.
