LORE In the spring of 1926, after nearly four years of construction, SS Greyspire was unveiled to the world by the Compass Travel Company, the legendary British shipping line founded in 1859. Towering above the shipyards like a massive grey steel fortress, the 120,000-gross-ton liner was unlike anything ever built, so enormous that newspapers across Europe and the world called her “the impossible ship.” Though still awaiting her engines, interiors, boilers, and towering five funnels, the sheer size of the Greyspire stunned the crowds gathered along the harbor. As workers released the launch restraints, the gigantic hull slowly thundered down the slipway and crashed into the river below, sending waves surging against the docks while tugboats rushed alongside the drifting giant. Guided toward the fitting-out basin, the Greyspire began the next stage of her construction, where she would soon become the largest and most ambitious ocean liner in history.
