Hosted by former SNL star, actor, and comedian Chevy Chase. It initially didn't perform well due to a combination of bad marketing, an over-enthusiastic audience, and Chase not being a good host. A year after its premiere, the series would change its name to Fox Overnight to appeal to a wider audience, Chevy continued to be the host while criticism of his tenure as host became more rampant. Chase left 1999 following heavy backlash. He was replaced by fellow comedian and Dr. Katz co-creator, Jonathan Katz. In contrast to Chase, Katz's tenure was praised due to his calm yet sarcastic demeanor and his enthusiasm, something that Chase lacked. Katz would end up becoming the longest-lasting host of Fox Overnight lasting 12 years. Katz, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, would retire from the series in 2011 as his condition made him unable to properly walk. In his place was Mike and Matt Chapman, co-creators of the online web-series Homestar Runner, making it the first time a talk show on live TV was hosted by two people. The Brothers Chaps' humor style was more focused on absurdism, and would often include novelty items on their desks when interviewing. Their tenure at Fox Overnight was initially highly polarizing. While some enjoyed the new take, others didn't. Reviews for this iteration would later become more positive and it would later gain a cult following. In 2017, The Brothers Chaps left as they started working for Disney Television Animation full-time. Comedian and radio personality Adam Carolla, who frequently collaborated with Jimmy Kimmel took over as host of Fox Overnight. Carolla was met with heavy scrutiny during his tenure at Fox Overnight, thanks in part due to his controversial takes on women and his political lean to the right. Following repeated outbursts against left-wing individuals, Adam was fired in 2022. Fox Overnight would replace him with Canadian-British motivational speaker and former voice actress Estelle Ellis. Ellis was the show's first female host, and took cues from the Katz era of the show. While incorporation his style of sarcastic humor and calm demeanor, she would add her own charisma. Additionally, she would also incorporate sections regarding mental health. This current iteration of the show has received positive reviews, with its segments about mental health gaining significant praise from critics, viewers, and experts in the field.
