The waves crashed against the cliffs. Clouds drifted across the sky, letting only thin slivers of moonlight slip through. She stood at the cliff’s edge, her nightdress swirling around her ankles, hair fluttering in the storm‑tossed breeze. A drop fell, splashing her forehead. Another traced her chin. Then more—faster and faster—racing each other through the cold night air. A steady dripping filled the silence as droplets struck the stone. Water pooled at her toes. Her hair clung to her skin. The wind whispered in her ear. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. And—she spun. She twirled on the slick, cold stone, arms opening gracefully. It felt as though an unheard song played just for her, every thought and feeling melting into bliss as she danced. Eyes closed, she moved without sight, leaning out with her arms spread wide like wings. Then—air whistled past her. She dropped for half a second before her fall stopped abruptly. Her arm was caught—held. She looked up. A dark figure gripped her tightly, leaning back with all his weight as he hauled her upward. She was dragged back onto the cliff top. She met her savior’s face—and gasped. Him. “Angela… I saw you fall.” His voice was low, shaken. She flushed and glanced at her cold, wet toes. “Thank you,” she whispered. He grinned—that infuriating smile she despised, yet felt tug at her chest all the same. “You should probably head home.” “Yes…” Her gaze drifted wistfully toward the cloud‑covered sky. His dark eyes shimmered. “I’ll walk you back. It’s rather dark.” She nodded, and together they disappeared into the night.
