Welcome to science class. This is my lecture. Have you ever wondered what’s really out there? I mean, they always talk about how there might be little green men who fly around in their weird-looking spaceships, kidnapping cows and leaving crop circles, but there could be anything… A planet made entirely of Jello, with spiders as the supreme rulers, a planet where all they do is sing, and their form of currency is chamomile tea and cough drops, a planet identical to ours in every way except they have only one eye! And maybe on that planet, there’s somebody thinking about the same things as me! The thing is, though, I probably won’t ever know. But really, does anyone know anything? We only know what our senses tell us, which isn’t much, in the grand scheme of things. We see a smile, but nobody knows what kind of pain it could be masking. We hear yelling, but it can be hard to tell if it is all in good fun or if someone’s really in trouble. We feel something soft, but it could be a blanket or a wolf’s fur. All in all, humans are undeniably…. weak. We are not born with claws or sharp teeth, unless you count fingernails or teeth that don’t even work sometimes, unless we pull them into the right place over a process that can take years, a process that I’m in the middle of. And yet, we believe that because of our “superior” intellect, we should be ruling the world. Even though we’re the ones single-handedly destroying the land, sea, and sky at the same time, it has taken hundreds of years for us to actually do anything about it. You don’t see other animals doing that, do you? We can’t make anything without it screwing something up. Cars may go faster than horses, but they’re so much worse for the environment. Oil may power around 32% of the world, but it kills a much higher percentage than that of fish and birds. Nuclear power may make a good, clean energy source, but, in the wrong hands, it can wipe out entire ecosystems and cities. Maybe no alien sightings have been proved because they’ve been scared away by the terrible way we’re treating our planet. All I’m saying is, something needs to change. Any questions?
