Stage or space to go to next Left arrow key to go back So, I genuinely was just talking to my friend and I wanted to say "Penguins aren't real" randomly as a joke and then I wondered what would happen if I searched it up and it turns out that they ACTUALLY AREN'T REAL. I mean, they technically are, but they don't exist anymore. Since it's a little hard to read, here's what it says: "You are actually onto a fascinating historical trivia point: the original bird named a 'penguin' (the Great Auk) is extinct. The birds we call penguins today were named later by sailors who thought they looked like the original. The original 'true penguin' (the Great Auk, or Pinguinus impenn*s)" (It won't let me say it without the asterisk) "was a flightless, swimming seabird native to the North Atlantic that went extinct in the mid-19th century. When European explorers later traveled to the Southern Hemisphere and saw the birds we now know as penguins, they called them by the same name simply due to their physical resemblance and shared flightlessness. While the original northern penguins do not exist anymore, the 18+ species of the Southern Hemisphere (like the Emperor and Gentoo) are very real and thrive across the globe -though many are threatened by environmental shifts." So basically, real penguins went extinct and go to the next slide to see what actual Penguins looked like.
