I groaned and rolled out of bed, but nothing could prepare me for the nightmare that lay ahead. Midway through first period, the intercom crackled to life, interrupting the teacher. "Attention. Everyone, get to the corners of your rooms and lock the doors immediately. This is an emergency."Panic swallowed the room. My classmates scrambled, shoving desks out of the way. I dived beneath a cluster of science lab tables, burying my face in my hands. The sudden silence that followed was suffocating. I held my breath and peered over the edge of the desk toward the window.I blinked, convinced my stress was playing tricks on me, but the horror remained plastered against the glass. It had a smooth, round head, completely hollow-looking, with soul-black eyes. Its neck, arms, and legs were long, twisted cords of bleeding flesh tipped with razor-sharp claws.A sharp, breathless whisper pierced the silence behind me. Don’t move.I froze. But across the room, my friends stood up, their voices trembling as they pointed at the window. "What is that?!""Get down!" I yelled. "Don't move!"Too late. With a deafening crash, the monster shattered the glass, showering the classroom with shards. It paused, locking its empty, pitch-black eyes onto my friends. Before anyone could scream, fleshy, elongated limbs whipped forward, snatching them into the shadows. The wet, tearing sounds that followed and the spray of thick, metallic-smelling blood are forever burned into my brain. Everything went pitch black. I could only hear the heavy thud of its footsteps, the screams of the dying, and taste the copper of my own blood in my mouth. When I finally peeled my eyes open, the world was dim and watery. I was suspended inside a large glass tank. Where am I? I rasped, the liquid filling my mouth.A figure in a sterile white coat leaned over the glass. "Oh, good, you're awake," she said casually. "We found you on the ground, bleeding. you were the last one alive in the school."I looked to my right and my stomach dropped. Beside me was another tank holding a twisted, feline-like creature. Suddenly, the liquid in its enclosure turned a vibrant, toxic red. Before my eyes, it mutated into a nightmarish beast. Masked guards stepped in and gunned it down without hesitation."Yeah, you really don't want to end up like that," the white-coated girl shivered, walking away.A man approached my cage, tapping on the glass. "Okay. Ready?"He pressed a glowing button on a control pad. Instantly, an excruciating, burning sensation flooded my veins. It felt like I was drowning in acid. My eyes rolled back, turning as black as ink. My bones popped and snapped as my arms stretched and twisted into unnatural proportions. Am I a... monster? I thought in a panic.Red Alert. Red Alert. Please send guards toward Room 101.The man panicked and ran out of the room. I didn't have time to process what was happening to my body before the heavy thud of boots approached. Armed guards stormed in, leveling their rifles directly at my tank. Every muscle in my body coiled tight. I was so stressed, so overwhelmed, I didn't even think. With a violent punch, I shattered the heavy glass. The guards opened fire, but I moved in a blur. Before they could react, I swept through them in a chaotic frenzy. Silence slammed back into the room. Panting, I stared at the severed helmets rolling on the floor. I didn't look back; I just ran out of the ruined building and into the blinding daylight. I skidded to a halt, looking ahead into the distance, where a cloaked cat stood, staring right through me.UH, the hooded cat thought, frozen in shock. What did I just see?
