One time when Alfred was experimenting with a new machine (it was pretty much a car that could molecularly teleport), he got into a major accident... Nikolai (and his sister Stevia) was trying to help prevent it, but the car's machinery went haywire. Alfred and his wife died, and Nikolai's eyes were damaged (he uses robotic lenses that he made himself)
