In the time it took me to make a new vessel, each one of my friends fell to this thing one by one until they were all gone. I collected one item from each of them as a keepsake to remember them by(Except for @CtrlPlusC- because they had nothing I could take, and a few others because they aren't relevant). As you may know, my powers are fueled by my emotions. So as my vengeance, spite, and hatred in my soul built up over time, it transformed me as my powers grew so much stronger than ever before.
