Autumn was in science class. But today, she couldn’t seem to concentrate on anything. All she could think was, I can’t believe I won’t be here after today. She felt a cold rush of longing as she looked around the classroom, breathing in the sweet stench of parchment and fruit. I’ll still see Silverfish and Horntail, she reminded herself, but it only helped a little bit. “Hey, Autumn, it’s time for lunch,” Silverfish playfully tapped Autumn’s shoulder, her silver wings buzzing. “Oh, right!” Autumn yelped, startled. She shoved her scrolls into her pouch and started to follow her friend. “I’m just thinking about how strange it would be, not being here anymore.” “When we get the bookstore open, we’ll still see each other every day!” Silverfish grinned. At the school garden, the duo dug up a couple yams, then took their usual spot by the sunlit window. Silverfish pulled out a box of honey drops from her pouch, then offered some to Autumn. “In celebration of our graduation,” the light-colored HiveWing muttered. The taste of the honey drop felt more bitter than usual today, reflecting her inner anxiety. Autumn was excited to be starting a bookstore with her friend, but it was the realization of how different it would be from a lively, science-filled classroom that worried her. Her expression must have given away her thoughts, because the next thing she knew was Silverfish wrapping her wings around her and saying, “It’ll be okay. We’re both in this together.” And Autumn smiled back.
