- Will o' Wisp Acres Updates - - Update 49 | Tack Fitting for Halo - - - - Halo has been getting bigger with every passing week, and now that she's developed a little more it's finally time to start backing her! I took things slow today as, of course, it is her first time, but I already know Halo is the calmest girl so I wasn't expecting anything too bad. We've already decided that we're going to train her predominantly in dressage, at least to start off with, so that's the tack I used on her today. I left the bridle for last as that can always be a little uncomfortable for horses who aren't used to it. I put a halter on her in the outdoor arena, better than a pasture as it has much more even ground, and started with the saddlepad. She was definitely very interested in it and sniffed a little but otherwise had no issues. As expected, the saddle made her a little bit more antsy. She pawed at the ground and shifted her weight a bunch to adjust, but with plenty of pets (and some treat bribery) we were good to go. The girth was no issue and I kept it two holes looser than I would if I were riding her just to keep the experience as comfortable as possible. It was a bit of a struggle getting the bit into her mouth at first, she kept yanking her head up to get away, but with some time and coaxing she eventually let me get the crown of the bridle behind her ears. She chomped a lot as she grew used to the sensation, but I just let her adjust for a few minutes. I quickly made sure everything fit well and wasn't too big, and that the bit was soft enough and wasn't caught under her tongue. Halo overall did an amazing job today wearing tack for the first time! I'll repeat this same process frequently for the next few and progress into doing flatwork and polework with the tack on to get her used to the weight, and then we'll finally be able to try out our first ride.
