Cymbospondylus, name meaning "cupped vertebrae", was a genus of Hueneosaurian Ichthyosaurians from the Early Triassic, living approximately 251 to 242 million years ago. The Cymbospondylus was a large Ichthyosaur, measuring 4 to 17 meters (13 to 55 feet) and weighing 4,000 pounds (2 tons) to 100,000 pounds (45 metric tons). Cymbospondylus shattered the assumptions of gigantism, reaching the size of a Sperm Whale within 3 million years of the first Ichthyosaurs appearing. Cymbospondylus was found in the formations around the mountains of Nevada, with complete skeletons concentrated in the American West, including smaller fossils from the Monte San Giorgio formation in Switzerland to Svalbard in Norway.
