Ollie prodded me with his paw. I rolled over on the grass. The wet grass. I shot up and felt the rain pelting down on me. “Ana, it’s raining. Bird found home.” I looked across the ditch to see Bird crouching in the rain. “What time is it?” I yawned. Ollie shrugged. “Bird was out earlier and saw home! C’mon!” He grabbed my paw and tugged me towards Bird. “It’s started to thunder.” Bird meowed. “Yeah, I know.” I yawned again. “Where’d the barn go?” As I said this, Bird seemed to remember why he was awake and stretched to get up. “This way!” He called. For a few minutes, we walked in silence except for the sound of the thunder and rain. At last, we saw the shadow of the barn in the distance. I stepped up to the barn and in that same step, that same second, a flash of lightning struck. “ANA!” Screamed a voice. After that, everything was a blur. Red and orange rimmed my vision as the barn caught fire, I ran inside, somehow sure that I wouldn’t be hurt. I yelled for everyone to get out, and something happened. I couldn’t explain it; I still can’t today, but I saw something. A blue cat. Not like the natural blue of a cat’s fur, like a ghostly blue, and it shimmered. She said something, but I can’t remember what. But after that, I ran from the barn to the creek. When I reached the stream, I dove into the cold water, the fiery colours fading from my eyes. I could see the steam rising from my fur as I floated in the creek. It felt... natural. A crashing sound came from the crops in the direction of the barn. “ANA!” Bird’s voice howled. Ugh. I sighed quietly. I didn’t want to deal with him right now. I plunged back into the water without thinking, but I was too late. Bird poked his rusty red paw into the water. I tried to swim away, but his paw brushed my head, giving me away. I surfaced at last, glaring at him. “What do you want?” I asked dryly, still in the water. Bird held my gaze in relief and worry. “Ana, are you okay?” Bird asked, pulling me out of the water. “Yeah, why?” I shook out my pelt, splattering him with water. His green eyes watched me carefully. “You... you were... struck by lightning.” He practically jumped on top of me and hugged me. I felt the warmth of Bird’s fur on my still wet pelt. Was Bird a friend? I couldn’t remember the last time anyone had been that happy to see me. I always felt out of place, but with this new friend, I felt safe. Safe. The word echoed in my mind. Safe. Safe. Safe. I was safe. For now. “What do you mean, struck by lightning?” I pulled away. Bird shifted uncomfortably, as if afraid to say any more. “Well... okay.” He began. “When we got to the barn, it was storming, right?” He reminded me. I nodded. “The lightning, I should have realized how close it was when the thunder started. As soon as you were in front of the barn, as if it was waiting for you, the lightning threw itself onto you, and you caught fire.” Caught fire? The words stuck in my throat, choking me from saying anything as Bird continued. “You ran into the barn, and everything caught fire, and you did something. I didn’t see what, but there was a blue light, and more lightning hit the barn. You got everyone out, and then you ran here, and now... there’s this huge mess at home. We have to get back. Ollie got trapped. No one else can get to him.” The second the words left his mouth, I was running back. The thunder rumbled again, and lightning struck. This time I felt it. The pain as I cried out and fell to the dusty ground. Bird pulled up to my side, not touching me. “Your fur!” He howled. “It’s flaming.” I held my paw to my eyes, and sure enough, it was coated with fire. Bird reached for a nearby stick, and I wished with all my might that it wouldn’t catch fire and hurt him. I felt nothing anymore. Just a numbing, hot flame. The stick touched my fur, and nothing happened. Bird dropped it, as I dropped my caution. He reached his paw onto my fur, and jumped back, hissing under his breath. “Sorry!” I cried. “No, it’s fine,” he sucked in a breath. “You go, I’ll catch up. Ollie’s in trouble.” I nodded and set off again. ~Keep reading in the notes and credits!~ ↓
*Sigh* Detector still being weird... ~Story Continues!~ This time, I didn’t hesitate to set fire to the field. This time, I wasn’t careful. This time, I made it to the barn. I saw the many cats huddled around each other, safely away from all flammable things in sight. I recognized the grey fur of Mother looking up in horror to see me rushing into the barn. She opened her mouth and then closed it. I watched in satisfaction to see her afraid for once. Then I lunged into the flames again. It was a fiery mess inside the place I called home. I looked everywhere for the rusty red fur of Ollie, until I found him, upstairs on the window-ledge. His fur was so on edge; he was at least twice his regular size. “Ollie!” I called to him. “I’m coming!” He yelled something back, but I couldn’t hear him over the roar of the flames. I dove through the blaze, red and orange swirling around me until it was a part of me. I leaped up to the ledge as a burning mess and really hoped I wouldn’t burn anything else. I picked Ollie up by the scruff and ran back down the ladder, out to where the flames ended. *Please don't burn Ollie," I thought repeatedly. When we got back outside, I saw my colony crowded around someone, and the fire was gone from everything but the barn, now drenched by water. I could make out a cat in the middle of the crowd. A cat surrounded by water. TN~ @yin9202 Story~Written completely by me Warriors based story~ Warriors by Erin Hunter Music~ zec53 on Pixabay
