I KNOW THIS ISNT MY USUAL PROJECT but I want to post this here instead of on @thoughtsndwishes (I’m still remixing it on there) because I think more people need to see this,, hijab is very much misunderstood even by muslims so let’s go! —— Sections: 1. Quran verses (more in project) 2. What hijab means 3. The 'awrah for both men and women 4. The reason for differences in awrah regarding gender P.S. I tried to explain this in a way that makes enough sense to someone who isn’t muslim. || First, we need to see where the hijab is in the Quran. That’s the most important step. I have multiple ayat (verses) from surahs (chapters/sections) that reference the hijab. 1. English translation: (O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.) 2. English translation:(Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.) !! the explanation of these verses are inside the project along with more, these are not the only ones !! Now, you might be thinking… "Woah, woah, woah, wait. Rae, I don’t see the hijab in these verses." Well.. it’s in the context. Now let’s go to the second step. || Secondly, we need to understand what the term "hijab" even means. I understand that people think it’s just the head covering (I used to think so too), but, no. It’s a noun (حجاب) coming from a verb (يحجب) which essentially means "to cover something from something else" (a cover, a curtain, whatever you want to call it), in this case, to cover a man from a woman or a woman from a man. Wait, men have hijab too? Yes! Of course they do! Though people don’t really talk about it as much, they do too, just in a different way. Also, hijab is different depending on context. It’s more detailed. That's where we go on to the third section. || Hijab, in detail. Here, we'll call it 'awrah. For women; Around male strangers and cousins: from head to toe, excluding the face and hands as stated by the majority of scholars. Around male family members (sons, brothers, uncles, parents): from the chest to the knee. Around her husband: no awrah. So she doesn’t have to cover anything. !! P.S.: by "sons, brothers, uncles and parents" I mean her uncles, her parent's uncles, their parent's uncles and so on. And her parents, her grandparents, her great grandparents and so on. !! For men; Around female strangers and cousins: from the navel to the knee. Around female family members (daughters, sisters, aunts, parents): also from the navel to the knee. Around his wife: no awrah. !! P.S.: by "daughters, sisters, aunts and parents" I mean his aunts, his parent's aunts, their parent's aunts and so on. And his parents, his grandparents, his great grandparents and so on. !! || Fourthly, why are woman and men's 'awrah different? Though they’re almost the same in regards to people in private, they are different in public. Simple, because that’s what Allah (our God) commanded us. I know, I know, that’s not the answer people necessarily want, but that’s basically the reason. Muslims do as the Quran says. Personally, and we see this in the real world, I think that a possible reason (or wisdom behind it) could be because women are very beautiful…… men are obviously handsome too, but, let’s be real, women cannot be compared. They are more attractive & more sought after. I also want to note that both women and men are required to lower their gaze, and not wear tight clothes that reveal the shape of their bodies. ———— That’s it for this project, I hope this shed some light on what the hijab actually is and you can include some things I missed or ask questions. I’m not up for debating or arguments, this is just to bring more understanding and clarity to a topic that is not really understood. Reminder that I put verses inside the project with translations and explanations if you are interested. Please do your own research too. This is what I’ve been taught and what I’ve personally researched. Peace.
