At 10:26 AM on June 4, 1942, American Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers caught the Japanese fleet at its most vulnerable moment. The Akagi's flight and hangar decks were cluttered with ordnance due to a chaotic, rushed order to switch weapon loads from land-attack bombs to anti-ship torpedoes.
