This month, I am celebrating not only pride in general, but also bisexual pride. OK! With that out of the way, let's start. _____________________________________________ WHAT IS PRIDE MONTH: Pride Month, observed every June, honors the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. It is a time for the LGBTQ+ community to celebrate identity, remember those lost, and advocate for equality. Celebrations feature parades, community gatherings, and educational events worldwide. PRIDE HISTORY: ➤ June 28, 1969 (Stonewall Riots): Police raided an NYC gay bar, triggering community protests that sparked the modern liberation movement. ➤ June 28, 1970 (First March): Activists marched in New York City to mark the riots, creating the world's first Pride parade. ➤ June 25, 1978 (Rainbow Flag): Artist Gilbert Baker designed the colorful flag to give the community a positive, unifying symbol. ➤ June 11, 1999 (Official Recognition): The U.S. government formally declared June as Pride Month to honor LGBTQ+ history and achievements. ➤ June 26, 2015 (Marriage Equality): The U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, adding a major legal victory to June's history. ↳ PRIDE FLAG MEANING: ~ The Left Chevron ~ ➤ Yellow & Purple Circle: Represents the intersex community. ➤ White, Pink, & Light Blue: Represents transgender and non-binary individuals. ➤Black & Brown: Represents LGBTQIA+ People of Color (BIPOC). ➤ Black Stripe: Also honors those lost to or living with HIV/AIDS. ~ The Right Rainbow ~ ➤ Red: Life ➤ Orange: Healing ➤ Yellow: Sunlight ➤ Green: Nature ➤ Blue: Harmony ➤ Violet: Spirit BI HISTORY: ➤ 1892 (Term Coined): Neurologist Charles Gilbert Chaddock used the word "bisexual" in English for the first time to describe attraction to more than one gender. ➤ October 14, 1979 (First National March): Activist A. Billy S. Jones helped include bisexual demands in the National March on Washington, marking the community's first massive national platform. ➤ October 11, 1987 (First National Gathering): Over 75 bi+ activists marched together at the Second National March on Washington, establishing the first nationwide bisexual network. ➤ December 5, 1998 (The Bi Pride Flag): Activist Michael Page designed and unveiled the pink, purple, and blue flag to give the community its own distinct, global symbol. ➤ September 23, 1999 (Bi Visibility Day): Activists Wendy Curry, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven Wilbur launched the first official day to celebrate bi+ history and fight erasure. ↳ BI FLAG MEANING: ➤ Pink (Top 40%): Represents attraction to the same gender. ➤ Purple (Middle 20%): Represents attraction to two or more genders (the overlap of pink and blue). ➤ Blue (Bottom 40%): Represents attraction to different genders. SIMILAR SEXUALITIES: ➤ Pansexual: Pansexuality is a sexual orientation where a person is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. It is often described as "gender-inclusive," meaning gender is not a deciding factor in who they fall for. ➤ Omnisexual (omni): Omnisexuality is a sexual orientation where a person is attracted to people of all genders and biological sexes. Unlike pansexuality, omnisexual individuals actively recognize a person's gender, and they may have distinct preferences or experience attraction differently depending on that gender. ➤ Polysexual (poly): Polysexuality is a sexual orientation where a person is attracted to many, but not necessarily all, genders.
