"What is this?" I ask, my voice trembling with fear. "You recognize this, don't you?" Ms. Fletcher sighs. "Lilliana, I know you're upset about your mother--" "My mother left. I'm still upset, yes, but that is not going to hurt me now." "Sit down," Ms. Fletcher gestures to the chair beside her desk. I crash down into the chair, my emotions somewhere between rage and sorrow. "Your mother is not dead. But she chose to leave for a good reason. I promise you that." "Then why did she leave?" "She left because it was the best thing to do for you." "For me?" I stare unbelievably into her eyes. "Yes. For you. Lilliana, you were in grave danger. People wanted you." I stand up, demanding to know more, "Why?! Why the h*ll did they want me?!" Ms. Fletcher looks up at me with those beautiful, sad eyes. I feel a gush of pity. "Sorry..." I murmur, sitting back down. "No... You have a right to be mad, Lilliana." Ms. Fletcher dazes off for a moment before giving me the true story of my mother. "Back when we were younger, Selina and I were the best of friends. We did anything together, we laughed together, and we told each other everything. And I mean everything. That includes her secret."
