For Sure. New year, new school. “Okay class, this is your new classmate, Enya Hita. She doesn’t speak a lot of English so everyone should be respectful.” Mrs. Frylie said. Suddenly hands shot up from everywhere, everyone was now interested in the new student. “Does she have an accent?” “Where’s she from?” “Can she sit next to me?” “Is ShE aN aLiEn??” “Now, now. Settle down, class. You’ll have time to talk to her after finishing our assignment.” The class groaned. She turned and looked at Enya. “Welcome to Pre-Algebra, 6th pd. Take a seat next to Joann.” Enya took small steps and sat next to Joann. She nervously played with her hair, anticipating what Joann would say. “Konichiwa!” Joann gave Enya a knowing smile. Enya just stared. “Oh. Uh, you… speak Japanese?” “Haii! That means yes, by the way.” She said, her smile becoming a small smirk. “Cool…” She gave an awkward grin, “Me too.” After class, as Enya was walking to her next class, she was interrupted with questions. That’s… that’s a lot of people. “What are your favorite hobbies?” “What is your favorite subject?” “What music do you listen to, or what instruments do you play?” “What is your favorite class so far?” And even, “If you could be an animal for a day, what would you be and why?” Weeks went by like this. People asked questions, she did her work, she stayed quiet when Joann asked a question and didn’t participate in class much. As Enya walked into English, a scrawny boy with styled, navy hair named Miyoung, who was also in her History class, bumped into her. All of Enya’s books fell to the floor. “Ah- I’m sorry. Are- are you okay?” Enya stammered. Miyoung jumped, “Yeah- yeah, uh, I’m fine. Are you… okay? That- that was my fault.” “Me?” Enya gave her usual awkward smile. “Uhm. Yeah. I… guess?” Once they picked up all of Enya’s books, Miyoung gave a small smile. “You- you’re the new student, right?” Enya smiled back. “Yeah. You’re the boy. The one who’s good at soccer and lacrosse. I’m in your P.E. class. I promise I’m not a stalker.” Miyoung laughed. Like genuinely. “You really think I'm good at sports?” “One-hundo.” Enya chuckled, “Do you have Mr. Readington now?” “Yeah. You sit next to Joann, right?” …ah. “Uh, yeah.”
