Elder Dragons Over Time P2 Check the bottom for P1 if you haven’t read it yet 2019: Back to reprints again as Dragonlord Ojutai is reprinted in The List. 2020: Nicol Bolas is reprinted in The List. 2021: Dromoka, Atarka, and Arcades, the Strategist are all reprinted in The List. Strixhaven features a cycle of Elder Dragons that are the founders of the school. Galazeth Prismari combines treasures and instants/sorceries into one archetype, Beledros Witherbloom produces pest and lets you untap your lands for 10 life once per turn, and Shadrix Silverquill lets you pick from a list of benefits to give to yourself and also gives you the option of giving them to your opponent, making it great for politics. Tanazir Quandrix synergizes with the +1/+1 counters plan of Quandrix and ups the base stats of your creatures temporarily when it attacks. Finally, Velomachus Lorehold lets you cast spells from the top 7 cards from your deck when it attacks. However, these cards weren't the only Elder Dragons this year. Modern Horizons 2 also featured Piru, the Volatile a three color legendary creature that has the same casting cost as the 1994 Dragons, just with a different color combination. It also requires a mana of each of its colors during your upkeep, further cementing the reference. 2022 Once again, there were a ton of reprints this year, likely because of the increased popularity of Commander and the increased support from WOTC. The original Elder Dragon cycle got reprinted with mural inspired art in a Secret Lair and Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire was on the list. The dragonlords all got reprints in one product or another besides Kolaghan, who was probably left out due to its lack of use in commander. However, the real highlight of this year was the Ancient D&D Dragons, which were the first non-legendary Elder Dragons. However, they continued the pattern of being especially designed for Commander. 2023: Only 4 reprints this year, a much lower number than most. 2024: The dragonslords and Beledros Witerbloom were reprinted again. 2025 This year featured the second and last Elder Dragons so far that isn’t part of a cycle, that being Final Fantasy’s Hraesvelgr of the First Brood. It also holds the distinction of being the only monocolored legendary Elder Dragon. 2026 (As of June 5th) Secrets of Strixhaven brought a new cycle of Elder Dragons based on the founder, each granting a different keyword to Instants and Sorceries you cast. Lorehold gives Miracle {2}, Prismari gives Storm, Quandrix gives Cascade, Silverquill gives Casualty {1}, and Witherbloom gives Affinity for Creatures. We also received a Secret Lair reprint of Ancient Coppet Dragon. Finally, the Secrets of Strixhaven commander decks each came with a reprint of their respective founder’s original card minus Lorehold. And that’s a recap of Elder Dragons based by year, which I think is one of the most interesting typing combos. Thanks for reading, and remember to look into Elder Dragons next time you need an interesting commander to build around. Check the Studio for other articles: Part 1:
