The holidays were over, and Marleen and Mia were back at Hogwarts. They had arrived on the Hogwarts Express the day before. The Yule Ball was tomorrow; neither Marleen nor Mia was attending. The following evening, Mia and Marleen sat together at a table next to the dance floor, watching the dancers. Marleen saw Julian Malfoy step onto the dance floor with Lilith Smith. She didn't know exactly why, but a sharp pain shot through her as she watched them dance. Julian didn't look very happy, while Lilith grinned maliciously at Marleen. Marleen decided to look away and chat with Mia instead. The next morning, they had Potions with Mr. Gryson. He wasn't particularly nice and disliked Gryffindors, having once been their Head of House himself—an experience that had left him with unpleasant memories. Afterward, they had Herbology (Marleen's favorite subject) with Professor Longbottom (Neville's grandson). Marleen liked Professor Longbottom because he had a great sense of humor and wasn't very strict. However, this earned him criticism from Mr. Gryson, who wanted him fired. Today’s lesson was great fun again. After school, Marleen and Mia went to the Gryffindor Tower together to do their homework. Once again, they had a huge amount to do thanks to Mr. Gryson; there had never been a lesson with him where they didn't have homework—and always a lot of it. Marleen often sat there for hours, deep in thought. Today, things went a bit faster, and afterward, Marleen was able to go outside with Mia and Julian—all three of them in cat form.
