For Gay Week's Thursday: Michael Mell! From the musical (YOUNG ADULT, I REPEAT, YOUNG ADULT, NOT FOR LITTLE KIDS) Be More Chill. This is genuinely one of my favorite musicals. And, unlike many of my fellow BMC fans (you know who you are), I kinda like the Broadway version. For those who don’t know, this musical had different runs in different places, one in Two River Theater, one on Broadway, and another on West End. Broadway switched actors for the protagonist, Jeremy Heere, from Will Collony to Will Roland (who was also Jared Kleinman from Dear Evan Hansen (another YA musical), Zeke from Goosebumps the Musical: Phantom of the Auditorium (kid-friendly), and Nate “Nato” Obenkrieger from the Black Suits (NOT AT ALL KID FRIENDLY…but it is my favorite musical -_-)), switched The S.Q.U.I.P.’s actor from Eric William Moris to Jason Tam, added new songs “Sync Up” “Loser Geek Whatever”. Guys, it’s not that bad >_< Anyway, I’m gonna rant now: Michael Mell in the book of the same name as the musical (it came out way earlier than the stage show and has a VERY different plot/ending, I’ve read it, um, barely qualifies as YA imo but okay) is described…not at all like George Salazar, his actor XD Book: white, tall, poofy brown hair Mr Salazar: very much not that Joe Iconis: Yes, perfect. FUN FACT: Will Roland auditioned to be Michael Mell all the way back then! Very cool stuff. In the book, Michael is, umm, kinda gross in ways I won’t get into. Jeremy was too ngl. Thankfully, this was never brought up onstage. Book Michael is depicted as a cool in a chill way. Musical Michael is depicted as cool (not popular, just cool) in a geeky way. Book says he's friendly with the popular kids, while Musical says this,"There's never been a better time to be a loser!!" Now, I'm just going to rant about Musical Michael because I love him: He. Loves. Pins. Patches. Anything that goes on hoodies. Well, I'm pretty sure, since if you google him you'll see George Salazar in a hoodie that makes Christmas trees jealous. Another FUN FACT: On the last day of school, I recreated a few of his patches from cardboard and paper, and my mother helped pin them to a red jacket.
(poor) Art: - Michael’s appearance is based on George Salazar, his actor for Two River, and Broadway. I hope it's clear that I do not understand wrinkles in clothes ;-; tips are appreciated if you have 'em! ALSO: I don't feel like drawings pins and patches and then some more pins and patches. So, you only get one...the headphones. I forgot to draw the headphones. I always forget to draw the headphones. - On another note, this is definitely the worst Queer Day drawing so far. Probably going to stay that way. I hope it will. Character: Michael Mell from Joe Iconis’ Be More Chill, one of my favorite (YOUNG ADULT, I REPEAT, YOUNG ADULT, NOT FOR LITTLE KIDS) musicals. There’s also a book the musical was INSPIRED by. “Michael in the baathroom, Michael in the bathroom at a party.” Character's Identity (Copy pasted from my Ravenpaw project): Gay - like a lesbian, but a guy who likes guys. Now, just like lesbians, I assume there's exceptions for multi-gendered folks and nonbinary people. I'd have to do some reading on it though.
