On October 27, 1906, a large balloon was flown 1,250 meters up in the air. This is part of Wilczech's new balloon program, which aims to provide long-term reconnaissance platforms without the limited flight duration of existing aircraft. The balloon itself remains aloft for long periods of time by being filled with helium gas, a safer alternative to highly flammable hydrogen. The helium itself is being extracted and refined at the Instrom chemical plant.
