A lot of mega pokemon have bad stats. Scovillain, glalie and blastoise being a few. Now, while these stats are all actually pretty good, they aren't for a mega. However, these pokemon have good things about them to save them, whether its their ability or being able to blow up. But, despite trying to look on the bright side, there is literally nothing positive about mega malamar. Firstly, on a non-competitive note, Well, it’s just so ugly. It’s so so so ugly. I don’t care how cool its reveal trailer was, it just looks so ugly and weird and its shiny is weird too, and that's coming from me, a person who accidentally stumbled upon 6 shiny malamar, 2 of which being alpha, and so I’m now disappointed to see them. Malamar has got terrible typing. Dark is great, it has always been a good, stable defensive pick, as seen in grimmsnarl, incineroar and umbreon, but then, you pair it with psychic, cancelling many handy resistances, most notably to dark and ghost, and piling on weaknesses like the infamous quadruple bug weakness. This may seem fine as bug is so terrible offensively, but when you’re that weak to one of the most common moves in every meta, U-turn, you have a major problem. That’s not even the worst part. Malamar’s stats are the worst I have ever seen on a mega. I looked them up and thought it was either some sick joke or google was wrong. But no, malamar’s highest stat is actually 120. That’s it’s special defense, and its defense is 88. Just to compare this, that’s the same as bronzor, a pokemon with nearly 200 fewer stat points in total. You might think though, if a pokémon like this is so frail, surely it has a good offense? Well, malamar’s one niche was contrary superpower, but even then 92 base attack was never much. Well they fixed this! Malamar got buffed to 102 attack. Just for anyone who didn’t catch my sarcasm there, this is an appalling number for a mega to be hitting. The special attack isn’t any better, sitting at 98. Krabby, the literal crab pokémon with a 325 base stat total, has more attack than this thing. Malamar is weak, frail, and slow, but that doesn’t matter because it can’t contribute to a battle at all anyway. It has no support moves either, and even if it did, there will always be a better option. Even that contrary niche wasn’t its own thing as in generation 9, contrary tera stellar tera blast leaf storm serperior basically made malamar even more irrelevant. Well, thanks for listening to this rant. Support is always appreciated, and I'm very grateful for everyone who is inspiring me to keep posting about what I love. Huge shoutout to who won May's Team of The Month.
