Released on November 20, 1985, Windows 1.0 was Microsoft's first graphical operating environment. Rather than being a standalone OS, it operated as a 16-bit graphical shell layered on top of MS-DOS, introducing users to a mouse-driven interface with menus, scroll bars, and tiled windows.
