Chapter Thirty — Names of Their Own The sun hung low in the sky, warm and golden, when Oakstar leapt onto the Highrock. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting.” Jadepaw’s heart thudded. Stormpaw stood beside her, tail twitching with nervous excitement. Cloudpaw limped out of the medicine den, still bandaged but determined, his blue eyes steady. Willowstep brushed her tail along Jadepaw’s flank. “Stand tall.” Jadepaw did. The Clan gathered, pelts brushing, murmurs fading into expectant silence. Oakstar’s gaze swept over the three apprentices. “You have all faced trials that would have broken lesser cats,” he said. “But you stand here today stronger than ever.” Jadepaw swallowed hard. Stormpaw’s ears pricked. Cloudpaw’s shoulders squared. Oakstar’s eyes softened as they landed on her. “Jadepaw. Step forward.” Her paws felt light and heavy all at once as she walked to the center of the clearing. “You have shown compassion, courage, and a heart that sees beyond anger and fear,” Oakstar said. “You have grown into a cat who listens, who learns, and who leads.” Jadepaw’s breath trembled. “Do you promise to uphold the warrior code, to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?” “I do.” Oakstar raised his head. “Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name.” A heartbeat of silence. “From this day forward, you will be known as…” “…Jadeeyes.” A murmur rippled through the Clan — warm, approving. “Your eyes have always seen truth — in others, in yourself, and in the world around you. May they guide you as a warrior of this Clan.” Jadeeyes bowed her head as Oakstar rested his muzzle on her forehead. She touched her nose to his shoulder, pride swelling in her chest. The Clan cheered. “Jadeeyes! Jadeeyes! Jadeeyes!” But Oakstar wasn’t finished. --- Stormpaw’s Turn “Stormpaw,” Oakstar called. “Step forward.” Stormpaw nearly tripped over his own paws in excitement, earning a few amused purrs from the crowd. Oakstar’s voice grew firm. “You have shown bravery, loyalty, and a fierce devotion to your Clanmates. But more importantly, you have learned restraint — the strength to hold back when your heart burns hot.” Stormpaw’s eyes widened, shining. “Do you promise to uphold the warrior code?” “I do.” “Then from this day forward, you will be known as…” “…Stormstrike.” Stormstrike’s breath caught. Jadeeyes felt warmth bloom in her chest. The Clan cheered his name. --- Cloudpaw’s Turn Finally, Oakstar turned to Cloudpaw. “Cloudpaw. Step forward.” Cloudpaw limped forward, chin high, refusing to show weakness. “You have faced pain, jealousy, and heartbreak,” Oakstar said gently. “But you have risen above it. You have shown honesty, determination, and a heart that refuses to give up.” Cloudpaw’s eyes glistened — just a little. “Do you promise to uphold the warrior code?” “I do.” “Then from this day forward, you will be known as…” “…Cloudflare.” A spark of pride lit Cloudflare’s eyes — bright, fierce, unbroken. The Clan erupted into cheers. “Cloudflare! Stormstrike! Jadeeyes!” Jadeeyes stood between them — Stormstrike on her left, Cloudflare on her right — and for the first time in moons, her heart felt steady. Not torn. Not confused. Not drowning. Just… full. She looked up at the stars beginning to appear. I did it. They all did. Together. THE END
