Chapter Two: Diagon Alley The muggle clothes were scratchy and uncomfortable. Mum had argued, again and again, that we should use the Floo Powder, but Dad was much too excited at this opportunity. “Marcie should experience muggle public places!” He had said. “Especially since it’s her first year at Hogwarts. We’re going by the Leaky Cauldron.” And now I was standing on the sidewalk, in a terribly stitched orange jumper, trousers that I kept tripping on because it was far too long, and bright red sneakers. In short, I looked like a jester. To soothe myself and lessen the embarrassment, I teased Ginny about her red and green dress. “Look who’s early for Christmas!” I poked at her. She was getting more and more annoyed, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of Harry, holding back a laugh. We stopped in front of a pub. It reeked of alcohol and sweat. Positively foul, though familiar in a strange way. Dad led us to the back courtyard, and a brick wall stood before us. Bringing out his wand, he tapped an assortment of bricks in rhythm. “Bloody hell, that’s awesome.” I murmured. “I thought so too.” Harry whispered, he’d heard me. I chose to ignore him, walking past. The first place Dad dragged me to was a building he called ‘Ollivanders’. He left me there, looking back at me and flashing a thumbs up before going back out, hovering near the window. And now I suppose I had to wait.
