My favourite hyenas are brown hyenas. I watched a documentary about them when I was like 5, and I really liked it. :). Here's art and facts about the animal. The key is further down. Pictures in order of appearance: • brown hyena in ghost town •Ghost town • cartoony/ low quality • Realistic/ high quality • Realistic/ high quality ultra ( added sandstorm and slight tints) • beach • Brown hyena on beach Key: 1 what are brown hyenas? 2 Ghost towns and why are they included here. 3 interesting facts ★1 Brown hyenas are the rarest hyena species. They're native to arid and semi arid parts of south Africa( like the whole southern part of the continent), and can be found in Kalahari and Namib deserts. However, a large part of the population lives in the southwestern coastal regions. The Namib coast. They can be identified by long, dark brown shaggy fur, pointed ears, striped legs. Adults have a cream ruff around their necks. They are scavengers, and in the coastal regions they look for washed up food. Or hunt seal pups, as they can be found around seal colonies. ★2 -Why are ghost towns included?- A ghost town is a human settlement that's been abandoned, normally due to a local industry failing, such as mining or farming. In the Namib desert, the now "ghost towns" used to be homes of miners, but where abandoned when the miners moved to a different place to mine, as there wasn't much left to mine. Now, brown hyenas use them for different things: They make dens in the ruins of the buildings and also use them as a refuge against the severe weather and Atlantic fog of the desert. They also use them to protect their cubs. ★3 Even though they are scavengers, they have very powerful jaws. •They can also eat fur and bones. •They're poor hunters, relying specifically on eating carrion. •Unlike spotted hyenas, they're solitary and quiet. •In areas of the Namib desert coast, they're referred to as the "strandwolf" which translates to beach wolf. •They can detect a carcass from several kilometres away, due to their powerful sense of smell. •They can travel very long distances, such as 35km, in search of food. • Instead of relying on rivers and waterholes for water, they can get water from moisture rich foods.
