Chapter Two – A Quiet Alarm The sun had barely risen when the thorn tunnel rustled. Jadeeyes looked up from her fresh‑kill as Maplewhisker, Blueberry, and Stoneleap padded into camp. Their pelts were ruffled, and their whiskers stood stiff with unease. Deputy Sparrowflight followed last. Her yellow eyes were narrowed, her tail low. Stormstrike moved to Jadeeyes’s side at once, brushing her flank with his tail. Cloudflare moved to her other side just as quickly, his fur brushing hers more firmly than needed. Stormstrike shot him a sharp look. Cloudflare didn’t return it. Jadeeyes felt tension spark between them like dry pine needles catching fire. --- The Patrol Returns Oakstar stepped out of his den. “Sparrowflight. You’re back early.” Sparrowflight dipped her head. “We need to speak with you.” Oakstar’s tail flicked. “Report.” “There were cats near the northern border,” Sparrowflight said. “Unfamiliar ones.” “How many?” Oakstar asked. “Four,” Maplewhisker said. “Maybe more. They stayed hidden.” Blueberry added, “They were moving together.” Stoneleap’s tail twitched. “And they were watching us.” A quiet murmur spread through the clearing. Warriors lifted their heads. Apprentices stopped talking. Even the elders looked uneasy. Jadeeyes felt her fur prickle. Organized rogues were never a good sign. --- Stormstrike and Cloudflare Clash Stormstrike leaned close to Jadeeyes. “Stay near me on the patrol.” Cloudflare’s ear flicked sharply. “She doesn’t need you glued to her side.” Stormstrike narrowed his eyes. “I’m making sure she’s safe.” Cloudflare stepped forward, placing himself between Jadeeyes and Stormstrike. “I’ll keep her safe.” Jadeeyes’s heart tightened. Stormstrike bristled. Cloudflare’s tail lashed once. The air between them felt sharp enough to cut. Pebblekit peeked out of the nursery, eyes wide. “Why are they fighting?” Jadeeyes forced her fur flat. “They’re not fighting, Pebblekit. Just… talking.” Pebblekit didn’t look convinced. --- Oakstar’s Decision Oakstar’s voice cut through the tension. “We’ll send a larger patrol at sunhigh.” Sparrowflight turned to Jadeeyes, Stormstrike, and Cloudflare. “You three will be part of it.” Stormstrike dipped his head, still glaring at Cloudflare. Cloudflare didn’t look away. Jadeeyes swallowed. She didn’t want to be caught between them, but she didn’t have a choice. --- Camp Grows Uneasy As the morning went on, the camp grew restless. - Warriors whispered in tight groups. - Apprentices practiced battle moves with stiff tails. - Kits stayed close to the nursery, ears pricked. - Even the birds in the trees seemed quieter. Jadeeyes tried to focus on her duties, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the border. Rogues watching PineClan… moving together… waiting. Stormstrike padded up beside her. “We’ll be careful,” he said softly. Cloudflare approached from the other side. “We’ll protect you.” Jadeeyes stepped away from both of them. “I can protect myself.” They both fell silent. --- Hazelpaw Watches Hazelpaw sat near the apprentices’ den, her amber eyes following Jadeeyes’s every move. She didn’t speak. She didn’t smile. She just watched. Jadeeyes felt a chill run along her spine. Hazelpaw looked away the moment Jadeeyes met her gaze. --- Sunhigh Approaches By the time the sun reached its highest point, the entire Clan felt tense. The shadows under the pines seemed darker. The wind carried strange scents. Sparrowflight called out, “Patrol! Gather at the entrance!” Jadeeyes took a deep breath and stepped forward. Stormstrike moved to her left. Cloudflare moved to her right. Neither tom looked at the other. Jadeeyes’s paws tingled with unease. Something dangerous was waiting in the forest. But something dangerous was also growing between the two toms beside her. And she wasn’t sure which threat would break first.
