Umber: A Backstory (yes, I'm getting a better title) Raina awoke to the very annoying sound of an alarm clock. She stumbled out of bed, and yawned so big her jaw almost dislocated. Downstairs she heard the unmistakable sound of her little sister, Amberly hopping around downstairs. Raina smiled, but she did wonder why she was feeling so much dread in her stomach. It was a Tuesday, and normally Raina loved school, being a level four was definitely the best, and Raina loved alchemy and all of her mentors. The social aspect was ok too, Raina still had some friends, like Ardren and Kalya, but sadly not as many as before they all had manifested. Aaaaaaaand that was it. The reason for all the dread. Today was your ability classes, and in Raina’s and some people’s case, ability detecting. All the abilities left that Raina hadn’t done, were like the ones that she had a zero chance of getting. Actually scratch that, below zero. And with a couple mental calculations, she realized she had 2 weeks until she was officially dubbed talentless. Great. Two more weeks and people can stop laughing about me behind my backs, she thought. Now they can laugh about me to my face! It took all of Raina’s willpower not to flop back on the bed. Instead she changed into her Foxfire uniform, and brushed her hair until it shone like the moon. Then she went down the stairs as fast as she could without running, yelled a hasty goodbye to mom, dad, and Amberly, and went straight to the leapmaster. She paused for one second, rolling her eyes at herself for never getting to Foxfire on time. Orientation was pretty rough, given the fact that she never had enough time to find her friends, and always ended up standing alone. The green of the level four wing calmed her down a bit, green was such a relaxing color, she could almost feel her muscles calming down. “Hi Raina!” Raina screamed and turned around to find a laughing Ardren. “Why did you do that?!” “And yet you're laughing.” Another voice chimed in. Raina turned around to see Kayla, also laughing, leaning against her locker. “Hey, so are you!” Was her reply. Within 20 seconds a completely serene hall had turned into one filled with the beautiful sound of laughter. “Ok we should probably go to our sessions.” Kayla finally gasped. At once all the laughter vanished from Raina’s face. “Yeah. Probably.” She agreed. “See you guys later.” “Uh, ok, bye guys” said Ardren. “Yeah, bye!” Kayla’s mentor was so nice, and vanishing was so cool, that even though Raina was happy for her friend she couldn’t help feeling a twang of jealousy. I mean, she basically had the dream Foxfire schedule! Stop, Raina, she thought to herself. You seriously don’t have any right to be thinking that. She spent the rest of the walk having a heated argument with herself for absolutely no reason. Her feet didn’t want to go through the door, but sadly she had no choice. The beginning part of ability detecting was pretty much the same as it has been for the last four years, except the only part that varied from day to day was the little talk on the ability. And today was the one that everyone probably secretly hated; shade. The talk about shades was mainly how they really weren't mistrustworthy, and about some of the stuff shades could do. She had to admit, shades could do some really cool things, but it still was so not worth it to become one. She was so focused on her thoughts, she didn’t even hear the instructions until the lights turned off. An hour passed, nothing happened, and then she felt something. It was so hard to place, almost like she could feel the darkness. Raina frantically tried to calm herself, there was no way she was a Shade, literally zero chance. Besides she hadn’t even done anything shade-y right? And then it happened. All the darkness in the room seemed to form into an orb, floating above her head. Raina could feel all the stares on her back, but that wasn’t even bothering her right now, all her brain could focus on was the unmistakable fact: she was a shade. ~hi! I’m so sorry this was so late! I’ve been really busy recently. So as I said this is a backstory to Umber. I’m gonna be putting up sections/chapters of it I hope weekly, but I highly doubt that’s gonna happen. Have an amazing day! happy lemur :)
I used some KotLC characters, but I gave them all of their personalities.
