The human world faded into a distant murmur of sirens, replaced by the deep, rhythmic hum of the ancient forest. Weeks had passed since Nyx and Borealis shattered the laboratory blast doors. In that time, the dense, mountainous wilderness had become their sanctuary. The deep valleys offered hiding places from the helicopters that occasionally droned high overhead, and the thick canopy shielded them from the handlers' thermal cameras.Surviving together had quickly become a matter of instinct. Nyx, with his towering Giganotosaurus frame, dark blue back, and powerful striped legs, provided sheer force. He could drive off larger, aggressive wildlife or tear apart fallen trees to uncover hidden paths. Borealis, small and nimble, used her gray-and-white camouflage to stalk fast-moving prey through the thick brush, sharing her catch whenever the giant couldn't find enough to eat.One evening, a violent thunderstorm rolled over the peaks, forcing them to seek shelter beneath a massive rock overhang. The rain fell in sheets, a cold wind sweeping through the valley. Borealis shivered slightly, her gray fur damp from the trek.Nyx noticed. He shifted his massive weight, stepping closer to the edge of the cave to block the wind. He lowered his immense, grayish-blue body to the cavern floor, curling his tail around to create a barrier against the chill. His purple-blue eyes softened as he looked down at her."Come closer to the rock," Nyx rumbled, his deep bass voice echoing softly against the stone. "The wind is coming from the north. You're losing heat."Borealis looked up, her light blue eyes catching the reflection of the distant lightning. She hesitated for a fraction of a second, then stepped into the warm space beside his flank. She settled down against his side, the contrast between her soft fur and his tough, purple-spotted hide surprisingly comforting."Thanks, big guy," she murmured, resting her white-tipped snout on her forepaws. "I'm used to the cold, but this rain cuts right through.""You shouldn't have to freeze," Nyx said quietly. He kept his eyes on the entrance of the cave, guarding the perimeter, but his mind wasn't on the forest. It was on the steady, rhythmic breathing of the theropod resting against him.Over the past few weeks, a strange shift had occurred within him. At first, Borealis had been an ally—a sharp mind to help him break out of a cage. But watching her navigate the wild, seeing the clever way she outsmarted the environment, and listening to her sharp, witty commentary had sparked something else entirely. Whenever she ran ahead to scout and vanished from his sight, his chest tightened with a sudden, sharp anxiety that had nothing to do with guards or drones. He simply didn't want to be in a world where she wasn't right next to him.Borealis lay awake, staring at the light blue stripes on Nyx’s legs. She, too, was fighting a battle against her own thoughts. As a Nanuqsaurus, her instincts told her to be a solitary hunter, to trust no one, and to view larger predators as a lethal threat. Yet, looking at Nyx, she felt entirely safe. He was strong enough to crush cars, but around her, he moved with a deliberate, gentle care, always making sure he didn't step on her or crowd her space. She found herself looking forward to his deep, rumbling laugh and the way his purple-blue eyes brightened whenever she returned from a successful hunt. She was falling for him. The realization made her neck stripes prickle with a nervous warmth. It was absurd—they were completely different species, brought together by a cruel human experiment. And yet, she couldn't imagine a future without him."Nyx?" Borealis said softly into the dark."Yeah?" He lowered his head, bringing his massive jaw closer to her level."Do you ever think about... what happens if the humans stop looking for us? If we're just free out here forever?"Nyx was quiet for a long moment, the thunder rumbling in the distance. "I used to just think about surviving the next day. But now... when I think about the future, I don't just see the mountains or the forest." He paused, his heart thudding heavily against his ribs, hoping she couldn't hear it. "I see you there. I don't think I'd want to be out here alone."Borealis shifted, pressing her shoulder a little firmer against his side. A quiet, genuine smile touched her jaws. "Good. Because you're stuck with me, Nyx. I'm not going anywhere."Nyx let out a soft, contented huff of warm air, closing his eyes as the storm raged outside. Neither of them spoke their secret feelings aloud just yet, but in the quiet safety of the cave, the unspoken bond between the giant and the scout grew deeper than the roots of the ancient trees around them.
