Passenger pigeons were the most common, North American birds and columbiforme species until they were tragically hunted to extinction, from billions to zero, a century ago. Their largely colonial-based behavior made them exceptionally vulnerable to mass harvesting by humans, yet played a vital role in communication, defense, and foraging. Massive flocks of pigeons would have dispersed various seeds in nutrient-rich droppings, provided a source of nutrition for several predators, and thinned forest canopies through consumption + perching. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Passenger Pigeon Comeback (De-Extinction): Revive & Restore started the quest for bringing back the passenger pigeon in 2012. Recently, pigeon PGCs (primordial germ cells) have been cultivated for the first time and edits are underway to recreate the genes of the passenger pigeon in the band-tailed pigeon; its closest living relative.
