The Caribbean is a collection of islands found in the Atlantic Ocean, near the gulf of Mexico. Isolated from the mainland, only specific mammalian lineages actually made it the ecosystems, which includes ground sloths and large rodents. Otherwise, practically no carnivorans and ungulates showed up. Birds also occupied many of the apex predator niches, and some flightless roles, as well. Most of the Caribbean megafauna guild ended up crashing shortly after the arrival of humans and various modern day species are at risk of extinction. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuban Crocodile, Cuban Sandhill Crane, Hutia, & More: The Caribbean is home to some final remaining species, such as the Cuban crocodile that is heavily adapted for land, the Cuban sandhill crane that is evolved in savannas, and various hutia species that claim herbivore niches. There are also other ancient mammals + reptiles. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aldabra Tortoises: Main browsing, grazing, and seed dispersing functions have been lost thousands of years ago, but could be restored through proxy tortoises. The Caribbean had their own large tortoises, as well, which makes introductions somewhat feasible. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.
