A small tear slipped down my cheek. I choked out another sob, burying my head even deeper. An angry cry echoed throughout the neighborhood as I flinched in fear. John was sure to find me. How was he even my brother? He'd always been a shady figure. But day by day, I noticed even more weird things. There were no pictures of his wife, and she never came to the house. John never went to a "job" and mostly stayed home surfing with other friends. I had gotten lost in my thoughts, barely noticing John walking up to Jay. I looked up, cringing. "Have you seen two girls? They ran away..Their furries," John asked, his deep, commanding voice scaring Jay. He shook his head quickly. "No..I haven't," he promised. I had never been a good liar, so the confidence with which Jay had told the lie surprised me. John charged back to the home, sputtering out curses. A storm had started rolling in, and John was sensible enough to go inside before the fog and mist rolled in and the rain poured hard. "Jay! River! Milo," a middle-aged woman screamed. I held my breath, hoping she wouldn't see Kestrel or me. "We'll be back," Jay promised as he scuttled off with his friends. Kestrel and I nodded, huddling next to each other as the rain poured down. Realistically, we wouldn't be able to hide for very long.
