A soft, melancholy piano starts to play.) MASON (Sighs, looking at his hands, then turns to Elias with an artificial, practiced smile)Elias. Look at you. The lions are asleep because they feed on your energy. A trainer cannot afford to be hollow. (Mason steps into Elias’s spotlight. He places a heavy hand on the boy's shoulder, squeezing a bit too tightly.)(VERSE 1) My boy, you slouch inside the cage, The lions sleep, they sense your grief. You bring your darkness to my stage, I'll whip away your disbelief. No room for tears beneath the crown, I'll put your smile right upside down... (Mason uses two fingers to force the corners of Elias’s mouth into a painful, forced smile. Elias does not fight back; his eyes remain dead.) MASON (Walking backward into the shadows, turning his attention to Lilly) And you. Don't think I've forgotten what you were before I built this sanctuary for you. (Mason snaps his fingers. A sharp, mechanical ticking sound joins the music, mimicking a clock or a beating heart.) (VERSE 2) And Lilly, shivering in the rain, An orphan girl with hollow eyes. I gave a home to all your pain, I bought your silence with my lies. So play your part, don't speak a word, A quiet mime is better heard. (Mason makes a locking motion over his own lips. Lilly instinctively mimics the motion, her shoulders slumping in submission.) MASON (Spreading his Wings wide as the music suddenly explodes into a grand, sweeping, sinister waltz)(CHORUS) I only hold the reins to keep us close! I only crack the whip because I care! The world outside is cruel, as Kenzie knows... But in my tent, we make the perfect pair. Step in time, dance for me, I'll force you into harmony!(With a wave of Mason's baton, Elias and Lilly begin to move mechanically, forced into a rigid, unnatural waltz choreography around the ring.) MASON (The grand music suddenly drops out, leaving only a haunting, romantic violin solo. He turns to Kenzie, his voice dropping to a soft, desperate whisper.) Kenzie... my beautiful Kenzie. Look at what we’ve become. Look at what you're doing to us. (He walks up to them, his expression a mix of genuine heartbreak and dangerous obsession. He reaches out to touch their cheek, but they flinch away.) (BRIDGE) My Kenzie, flying far too high, You used to look at me with grace. But now you look into the sky, And wish to flee this gilded space. I cannot let you fall again, Even if I must cause you pain...Your safety rests within my net, I'll make you love the man you met. (Kenzie looks up at the trapeze high above, a single tear cutting through their stage makeup. Mason grabs her wrist, pulling her close into a forced ballroom hold.) MASON (His voice grows louder, losing its gentleness as the orchestra swells back in, heavier and louder than before) You think I'm the monster here? I am the only thing keeping this family from bleeding out on the sawdust!(He pushes her back into the center with the others. The waltz tempo accelerates into a manic, chaotic sprint.) (OUTRO) (The brass section blares. Marching drums thud like a racing heartbeat.) So take your cues! And hold your breath! We perform this act until our death! (Mason raises his baton high. The stage lights instantly flash to a blinding, blood-red color.) Welcome to my show! (Mason snaps his baton down. A loud, echoing crack of a whip echoes through the theater. Total darkness. The music box gives one final, dying click.)
